New brakes, new rotors, still not super smooth?

So I put all new rotors all around, all new pads (including ebrake shoes), all OEM Toyota... but I notice a weird noise/feeling on the first few stops of the day. Don't know how to describe it, guess it would be.... come to a stop, slowly let off the brakes, then get a rubbing noise like if you were to take your finger and wet it then rub it along a smooth surface. Or kind of like move an eraser over a piece of paper. If that makes sense...

After the first few stops or so it goes away, so probably no big deal. Just curious if I did something wrong or anybody else experience this?

Did you make sure that the brake dust covers were positioned correctly? They can easily be bent one way or the other by accident and grind as you drive. More of a grinding and not a wet finger on a smooth surface, but worth a quick look.

brake dust covers? you mean the shims? as far as the shims I installed them all with a bit of brake grease, but that was pretty much it. Not sure about brake dust covers.... all I have is rotor, caliper, shim, pad...??

The piece that I'm talking about is immediately behind the rotor in this picture, it is thin material and if it is slightly bent towards the rotor, the rotor will grind on it when you drive.



Like I said, this may not be the part that is causing the issue for you, but it is easy to check. You don't need to pull the wheel or anything.

Did you not replace calipers ? Notorious , want to make sure didn't waste your dough and not look at them . Plenty of threads on them

Ahh, OK, yeah the brake dust covers are fine. No grinding sound ... The sound / feeling I get is more of a rubbery / catchy sound, like the pads are a bit grabby, but only happens when I apply the brakes, like backing out of the driveway or something... for the first few stops of the day, then it goes away for the rest of the day. Almost like a tad bit of brake dust lubes 'em up or something I dunno.

I just did a test ... took my finger, dry, and ran it across my desk while pushing down hard... the grabbing/friction you get doing that is the best I think I can describe what the brakes are doing. But again only first few stops of the day then it goes away.

No, didn't replace the calipers, they seemed fine. Notorious? Like a common problem? Should I have lubed up the calipers or something? I had Toyota do a full brake bleed & refill after I was all done. The new rotors are oh so smooth and everything else works great. No more bouncing on hard stops... Maybe I'm being too finicky, it's no big deal really as it goes away after the first few stops, but just a tad bit annoying I guess as I'd have thought new everything should be super smooth all around, especially all oem stuff.

Sounds like the pads are either moving around and creating the grabbing feeling, or not bedded in correctly. Try cleaning the rotor surfaces front and back and filling the procedure to bed them in?

I just replaced my front brakes, calipers and rotors. I'm getting a rubbing that I think is the caliper rubbing on the rotor. What does "Bed" them in correctly mean? They just slide on.... Do I need to do something to the rotors to make them seed into place better? I thought it was weird when I put them on, but just assumed when I put the wheel on with the lug nuts that the rotor would "Bed" into place on it's own. Doesn't seem like it worked. HELP!!!!

did you clean the rotors when you put them on?

Thanks for this. That wasn't what I thought it was, but good to know. My problem is that the Caliper is rubbing on the rotor, like the rotor is too big. I did the other side as well and didn't have a problem with that. I guess I'm just going to take it all back off and do it again. Any other thoughts would be great! Thanks

I'm not familure with the older models but there is a larger and smaller rotor. The sport package got the larger rotors and the SR5 got the smaller. I forget what the Limited come with. Maybe the box had a sport rotor in it and you have small rotor calipers.

Thanks, Figured it out. I do have the sport with the larger rotors. Turns out that living in the rust belt sucks. I had to whack at those rotors so hard to get them off that I ended up knocking the dust shield. I messed it up enough to have to cut out a super small section of both fronts that were rubbing against the rotors. Thank god I don't live in Ohio anymore. Two front calipers, 4 rotors and all around new brakes. Oh not to mention the slide pin on the back caliper was so rusted I had to get a new rubber bushing and a new slide pin. 8 auto parts stores in 2 days. 14hrs worth of work. I'm finally done. I did the wife's FJ the day before with all new rotors and brakes and it only took me 2.5hrs. :gun4:
