New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Anyone have these in the p-metric 285/70/17 flavor? Look like a good option but a little heavier than you standard p-metric 285 coming in at 50.5lbs. Still not bad considering most e-load weigh at least 56lbs in the same size.

The load range E are heavy beasts. Just took a road trip and didn't mind the weight at all, but you can feel it.

I am fairly new here as far as number of posts, but have been diligently reading here for the past 3 months, gathering all of the info for my big mod project. Thanks to everyone for the informative posts!

I just ordered these tires in P285/70r17 to go with my new wheels.

Can anyone tell me what they might believe the ride difference might be between the P and the LT version? Would the LT ride substantially different?

I juts got my 06 T4R V8 back today from the shop. I had the adjustable 5100 Bilsteins and Daystar rear spacers (2.5"/2"). Tomorrow morning it goes to the upholstery shop for the Katzskin leather. Wednesday it goes to the paint shop for a new color (metallic blue).

Will DEFINITELY post a bunch of pics and a writeup for all to see.

Appreciate any feedback on the tire ride, though:wink2:

Just pulled the trigger on these in P285/70/17. Discount tire showed low inventory so I went ahead and ordered a set. Hopefully its a decent tire lol :noidea:

Have any former Cooper AT/3 or ATP owners switched to a set of these?

I'm interested to hear about their wet pavement performance and mud clearance (self-cleaning).

Also, I've read through this thread and I haven't seen any confirmation of a 275 size other than an insider mentioning more sizes are coming... Has there been any more development on this? ATP's don't seem to be offered in 275 anymore, and I'm not 100% interested in the "looks" of the AT/3, but if it comes down too it, I'd rather have the superior tire in that size.

I asked my local discount tire about the sizing and they said they had no info on any other sizes. The guy who helped me wasn't very enthusiastic and likely didn't care much about it. I'm holding out on my purchase until I hear some long term reviews. Every new tires feels better than the set they replace. I'm waiting for the honeymoon phase to fade.

All the specs you need are on the website: Just scroll down and click on Sizes & Specifications: WILDPEAK A/T3W TIRE | Falken Tire

The AT3Ws are in a little bit of a short supply right now. The inventory should shore up within about a month.

For those who want something more aggressive the Falken MT has also now been released. Falken has been testing these tires for several years now trying to get things right before releasing them. The tread pattern and sidewall look amazing on these. WILDPEAK M/T TIRE | Falken Tire

I saw the MT yesterday on the Domello Offroad 4Runner in a 35" size. Looked amazing... but even with the lift, trimming and everything else he has done, the truck was still showing signs of rubbing.

2,500 miles down, happy with the tires. My average mileage has dropped about .7 MPG. They are like glue in the rain. Trac and VSC have not come on since I had these mounted. I drove all over the point washington state forest trails and some powerline roads in Destin, FL (general vacation shenanigans in FL mud and sand) and they kept me going through places I should not have been solo wearing flip flops three states away from home. Way more control, no need for excessive speed or wheelspin. They are a little stiffer on the street and will howl a little like a MT on cloverleafs if you are going too fast, but they exceed the grip offered by the OEM tires in all conditions.

What's odd about it to me is that the MT in the photo has a different tread pattern than the MT official tread photo on the same web page.

I'll join in on the fun, just put these on Tuesday. Stock size 265/60/18. Almost wanted to get 265/65 but the deal I got on the stock size and rebates was too good, maybe next time. Still new, but already tried in the rain yesterday no problems, good grip, no hydroplaning, good wet stopping also. Almost as quiet as the all season Michelin Latitudes I was running, hard to hear difference, except on really really smooth roads, way better than I expected. Look good too.

Noticed these are rated Extra Load vs standard, I don't think that comes due to any difference in the tire sturcture, noticed the 265/65 was only available in SL. Not sure what the difference would be to allow for XL in the size I got?

How's the ride with the E rated tires? I have some standard load Cooper ATP's that are coming to the end of their tread life and am thinking about getting these wildpeaks, I love the ride of my Coopers!

I'm having a difficult time finding them in the standard load for a good price so I'm thinking of getting them in the E rating. Has the extra load rating made the ride stiffer or increased ride harshness?

265/60/18 is passenger tire, not E rated

The MT tires were in development for about five years. There were many development tires issued to different off road manufacturers/racers/etc. That being said, the picture you're probably seeing is that of one of the trucks with a pre-final design. Not sure why they would have allowed that on the website, but they did cause the picture is awesome.

For those trying to understand the difference between a SL and XL rating on a tire this is a good read: You Gotta Carry That Weight - Tire Review Magazine

There are some tires where the company will make two versions of the same tire, one a standard load, and one with extra strength in the sidewall to qualify as extra load. However, on tires such as the AT3W, just one version is made (with the exception of the LT tires), and that single version stands on the verge of qualifying as XL, therefore sometimes are labeled SL and some XL. In general LT tires are typically a heavier duty tire than a XL tire, particularly in our size range. There are significant structural enhancements made to carry heavier weights. However, a common miss conception is that there a more plys in an LT tire. Originally this was true, however you'll notice that they now call it "ply rating" which means that it has the equivalent of the old number of plys, and not necessarily that many plys.

here's an example of specs can be deceptive:
AT3W 265/60R18 XL Carrying capacity is 2,601lbs
AT3W 265/65R18 SL Carrying capacity is 2,601lbs
So whats the difference in the above two tires... likely none other than the size. In reality, the us standards for an extra load tire moved just slightly with the change in tire size and the tire no longer qualified as XL.

This has gotten quite a bit more interesting in recent years as the introduction of CUVs and small heavy duty vans have blurred the lines in between tire segments. Sizes that used to be only for cars, are now being used on heavier CUVs etc.

Hope that clarifies a few things.
