Ordered Falken AT3 P 265/70/17 and received them after two weeks. Now I’m waiting for Dustin to ship out his FN six shooters,so I can put them on my limited!

What piston size and design and what type compression and rebound valving does Elka use?

Glad to hear you're liking them! I've been very pleased with my set of LT E AT3Ws. Was annoying though at the beginning as the tireshop found ALL 4 to be out of round but Falken replaced them pretty quickly.

Also, really liking the clean look of that roof rack. Is that a yakima?

Thanks and if you’re referring to my vehicle, it’s actually a Rola brand rack. I found an amazon deal on a used-excellent condition rack and the price was too good to pass, even if it sucked. It hasn’t sucked at all. It’s been a great rack and was in perfect condition. You can buy extensions for it too if you want it bigger. This is the original size and works well to not block my sunroof or interfere with opening my hatch.

Back on topic. I’m going in for alignment in a week or so. I’m wondering if I’m slightly out which may be leading to increased noise. I’ll report back if this is the case. Otherwise loving the tire and I’m actually catching more looks with this tire than any other rubber I’ve ran. Same was true when the tire first came out and I ran them years ago. I see a ton of people checking them out at traffic lights or in a parking lot. Never got this with my other rubber. Surprising but also interesting.

I’m really interested in this noise. Wildpeaks and Ko2 are same price. So it’s a toss up but noise is ranked higher than mud performance for me.

Okay I think I finally have a good answer to the noise issue with the Wildpeak A/T3W. My first post on this thread mentioned the noise and vibration I was getting with my Falken. In my second post I mentioned having them rebalanced (installer claimed there was no noise or vibration and both times were road force but never provided results/numbers) It seemed to be better but still noisy.

I did a 500 mile road trip and once again noticed a cyclical vibration (10 seconds smooth then ten seconds of vibration). Still noisy kind of a fluttering noise like a tire with cupping or failing tread. The tires did beautifully off road on 35 miles of Jeep trails. Unfortunately the highway and road issues were driving me crazy.

Went to a different tire shop and paid for a road force balance. Results came back that two tires were on the high end of barely acceptable according to the technician. Two of the tires were balanced with incorrect amount of weight as well. The Road Force numbers: LF - 6 pounds, RF - 12 pounds, LR - 22 pounds, RR - 21 pounds. He said anything over 18-20 would cause noticeable vibration issues.

I personally rotated the rear tires to the front and confirmed that the noise and vibration moved to the front. Next I contacted the online tire retailer and requested warranty replacements on the two high road force tires. The replacements were installed the next day by shop number 2. They road force balanced them and now all is well.

Did a 200 mile highway trip and now I have relatively quiet tires that don’t vibrate annoyingly. They’re definitely louder than the stock tires, but nowhere near as loud as the messed up pair of four I received the first time.

Bottom line, make sure you get Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires road force balanced. If they’re loud or vibrate request replacements right away and they’ll make it right.

My P285/70-17s appear to be well balanced. They drive great and although some have a little more weight than others, I’d say they seem fine.

My noise complaint is of the frequency of the hum they produce. They’re still what I would consider quite for a hybrid AT, but I’d say at this point they’re barely a notch under the KO2’s sound increase at 5,000 miles.

Sound is so hard to gauge. I would not consider these loud but they ARE at AT tire of a more aggressive design so expect noise accordingly.

Pretty much the same experience I had, however I had to replace all 4. Its all good now though!

I think that everyone interested in tires will find the new revisions to the Discount Tire website interesting.

You can now search by vehicle and then by performance parameters and you get the tires ranked from best to worst in accordance with the testing I mentioned earlier.

I am giving you a snapshot based on 265 70 here:
https://www.toyota-4runner.org/3290836-post13.html

Notable: P-metric Michelins and the P-metric Wildpeak rule the world when it comes to street. And as Decipher and I have proven, the P-metric Wildpeak has great traction offroad, from AZ and UT rock to Midwestern mud.

By contrast, the LT Widlpeak scores much lower and also much lower than the LT MIchelins.

The Ridge Grappler LTC scores very poorly and the KO2 is at the bottom of the pack.

The best scoring LTs are the Michelins and the Hankook ATM as well as the heavy-duty Wrangler MTR which is notable.

EDIT: THat's with my zip code, not sure it matters though.
Also, this type of search may only be possible with the stock size tire. I tried an optional size for our Subaru and the rankings did not show up. They did in the OEM size.

Interesting...

Are the rankings based on user reviews? The Hankook Dynapro ATMs have always had stellar user reviews but they don’t seem to have much notoriety in the off road world most likely due to rather boring sidewall design.

No, it is whatever independent testing they use, those are actual tests, that's what they told me by email.

But I have no time to look into what "Treadwell" is right now which is the branding that goes with the rankings.

I looked more into it and I appreciate the info. What Discount ranks as “best” has lower consumer ratings than the next tier which made it more than suspect to me.

Which size and load are you considering?

Im looking at LT285/70/17 on stock Trail wheels. I know the E load is to much but they dont offer a C and worried about the SL??? being to Prius like. (carried over from our talk in the Ridge Grapplers thread) A low pitch hum I can live with but it was the mention of the higher pitch that has me concerned. Over on another board someone mentioned that the SL was close to other brands C rating is why the Wildpeaks dont come in that.

I know discount tire has a return policy but I will be buying these next week before I go on vacation and the mileage i would put on them is a problem.

I quoted a few pages back a quote from a Falken rep explaining Falken’s design and ply system. By rating and design, the Falken P series is more robust than a typical P series tire offered by competitors. They also all share the same sidewall construction and ply rating regardless of standard load or E load or anything in between.

I never wanted to be concerned about not having enough tire, so I ordered both. After much soul searching, consideration of the massive weight difference between 285/70 SL vs E, and my own concerns about ruggedness when evaluating my particular off roading terrains, I made a last minute choice to go SL. C would have settled it for me without a question but honestly I haven’t once regretted the decision. My on road ride is great, the lighter tires have allowed me to gain MPGs again, and they were a little cheaper to boot.

Off road, the SL has absolutely impressed me and I have been so impressed that I doubt I’ll wish I had more plies for my needs. Time will tell but I’m ecstatic about my choice.

Es balance worse and are louder too, as determined by the consensus.

As for noise, I’m now accustomed to it and really have no complaints since the tires do so well in every aspect. If they sucked in any of the areas that mattes, I would not tolerate the little more noise than I was expecting.

I have them on three cars now.

4R in stock size , SL. Super smooth ride at 37 psi. Quite for an AT tire. No AT Tire that is any good off road will be as quite as the stock street focused tires. Handle well, great in snow and rain. Also love that even though they are the stock size they are noticeably bigger, diameter and width. There are not hard rules on tire sizes. Combined with my Rays 10, the look part is good for me. Really they look like a 275

Avalanche also has the same size and type as the 4R. Same comments. Better than any tire this truck has had in the snow. It is a 2002, so it has seen several tires over the years.

Wrangler JK has the LT version in 33”. They didn’t have the SL in this size. Still a huge improvement in noise and snow/wet than the C Duratracs they replaced. Much more quite as well. Not as good on ice as my SL versions but just as good in deep snow. I did prefer the look of the Duratracs though.

No vibration issues at all on all three sets. I did have them laser balanced kind simulator to road force but not only positions the weights around the parameter but outside to inside. SCR Performance, Loveland CO. Really a race shop but they have better equipment than anyone in Northern CO and most drive 4Rs or FJs as well as their sports cars. If you live in the area skip Discount Tire, the added bonus is they won’t scratch up you new wheels like DT.

It looks like these were announced about a month ago, but I haven't seen much info on them other than they were replacing the Falken Wild Peaks. Despite the great reviews on the Wild Peak/Rocky Mountains, I was really hesitant to run them because of the poor grooving and how they look like street tires when worn rather than an AT.

Looks like the new A/T3W's are fully grooved now. Anyone else hear anything about these tires? Judging from the press photos, it looks like Demello is testing these out on their 4Runner. The sidewalls look a little bland to me, but I'm curious about these.

I wouldn't buy again. Had a set, wore down fast, noise level was not bad, very stiff tire hell on chuck holes but good traction on rough terrain, not good street tire. I had a sidewall blow out, thankful was only going about 30mph...wow what a scare. Replaced under warranty. They look good though. From all my reading and the experiences I've had the KO2 is my choice now.
