New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

I've got a 2020 Venture edition, threw on some LT275/70 Cs on the TRD rims and got some decent rub not even at full deflection and have a Cornfed 2/1 spacer kit in the mail to hopefully fix the issue. Don't remember seeing anyone post about rub with 275s, but I may have just missed it.

Pics?

Just a heads up - 275s will rub.

Heck, these tires in 265s will rub a bit, especially under suspension flex or backing at full lock.

.

I was directed here talking about air compressor elsewhere...

Have the falken wildpeak 265/70R17 SL on stock wheels.

Is there any reason not to air down these tires, or any specific concerns?

Not doing any serious rock crawling, only point of airing down ("slightly") is for more comfortable ride on rougher forestry roads and minimize puncture risk

SL tires are most venerable at the sidewall from rocks and sticks because more of the side wall comes into contact when aired down. You'll be fine airing down to 18 or 20 psi.

Stock suspension LT275/70/17 only a tiny bit of rub on the passenger front mud flap at full lock going up my drive way. Also did the fender liner mod hope this helps anyone looking to upgrade. [emoji1360]

Been lurking around for some time and doing as much reading as I can, didn't quite read all 150+ pages, did read a nice chunk of it though. I picked up a 2019 4runner SR5 Premium mostly for fishing and camping. which turned into overlanding/offroading. After a ton of reading I decided to go with:

Dobinsons IMS Suspension Kit Toyota 4Runner 2010-21
* C59-300 - 1.75 - 2" lift in the front, haven't decided where i'll land yet
* C59-325 - 2" lift in the rear

JBA UCA's in standard for it's reliability and ease of replacement parts should i need them in a hurry.

I'm more of a weekend warrior than anything, the 4runner is my DD so I'm trying to balance ride quality, MPG, acceleration etc with capability. I live in Colorado, run trails once a month and fishing the rest of the time, so generally dirt roads and level 1 or 2's will get me to most fishing spots but i'm not shy about pushing the 4runner harder if it means better fishing / views (photography). What draws me to the AT3W's is it's such a great all around tire sans balancing issues. The most difficult trails I've ran so far are Tin Cup Pass (in 2019) and Imogene last year. I don't envision myself running any trails more difficult than either of those and i'm more a fair weather off-roader.

After reading this thread i'm still on the fence on the Falken AT3W WildPeaks due to balancing issues. My initial plan was to go with 275/70R17 but am considering the 285's which is why I picked up the UCA's, even if I don't go with 285 they'll still be of help. I'm planning on regearing to 4.56 in the future, not sure when (likely in the next couple of years).

To the best of my knowledge, if i go with 275's i can stay on the stock SR5 wheels, if i go up to 285, i believe I'll need spacers (1.25") or a new set of wheels with a -10mm offset?

I'm torn between the SL and C rated tires. I like the idea of a SL rated tire for MPG and comfort, just a bit worried about longevity. I believe mast4r said the C wouldn't provide more protection than an SL, it will however likely wear down faster than a C rated tire? Given my usage though, maybe it won't matter too much?

Considering the weight of the tires, if I do go for a C tire it'll be in 275's or SL if I go to a 285 i think. The last option i suppose is, i could always wait a bit longer, try to find a lighter wheel to help offset the weight of the tires a bit.

I'd be open to other options provided they perform as well as the AT3W's do. Deceiver mentioned the MT01's, after looking at the weight though i'm worried about breaking power on the heavier tires.

Thanks!

Hey guys, I currently run stock sized wildpeak SL tires and tow a boat on a double axle trailer about once a month. I’d estimate it weighs a total of 4,000lbs. I haven’t had any issues so far, but never really thought about tire choice until now.

Does the trailer being double axle take a load off of my truck?

I’m getting some new wheels soon and wondering if I’d be safe continuing to tow with my current tires if I swap them on to the new rims or if I should get some 265 E load tires?

I’m also looking at the 275 wildpeaks in C load just to go a little bigger, what do you guys think about these?

Thanks for your help!

I know you posted this a few weeks ago, but you should be fine with SL tires. I tow a boat as well, only a single axle and about 3500 loaded and fueled up. My tongue weight is way light though. Like 30lbs.... I have to load up the front of the boat to get close to the 10%-15% recommended tongue weight. (mainly since the major weight of fuel and the large cast iron mercruiser are all towards the back...) So depending on your boat and how it’s balanced over your axles, it may not be putting a tremendous load on your hitch or rear axle. Keep in mind these AT3W are heavy for their size. If you go with an E or C especially in a larger size, it will affect your power and thus towing experience.

I also have these tires in SL stock size. About to hit 60k on them and they are done. Have been getting louder the last 20k miles. Have worn well and performed well. I’ve been happy with them. I’ll be going with a Toyo Open Country SL stock size for my next tire most likely. They are 7lbs lighter per tire and look good and appear to perform and wear well... I’m hoping to get a little more pep back from the lower unsprung weight and reduced rotational mass...

I finally pulled the trigger on 285/70/17 SL load rating tires yesterday. Finally got rid of the KO2s. I love the way these things ride and look. These will suit my needs better than the E-rated KO2's.

I installed Falken Wildpeak AT/3 in stock size 265/70/17 and I was surprised with how the ride changed at different PSIs. At 40 PSI, the ride was unbearably rough. Felt like the truck was bouncing all over the road. At 35 PSI, the ride wasn't much better. It felt much steadier on the road, but the ride was still extremely rough. It felt like I was riding on a coblestone, even though the road was completely smooth.

At 32 PSI, the ride is completely normal and smooth.

edit nvm.. on falken site the SL/P shows in a different area than rest of sizes

did the spacer kit fix your isssue ? i also have a venture and planning to put the 275s on... can you link me where you got the spacer from ?

I lean towards preferring a lighter tire weight over a heavier tire weight.

My Falken AT3W's were P metric Standard Load (SL) - stock size 265/70R17 46.5lbs each (31.7 inches tall).

If you look at the Specs of the C load 275 Wildpeak AT3. You'll see that they weigh 57.1lbs each (32.4inches tall).

My new LT285/70R17 E Rated Yoko Mud Terrains weigh 58.2lbs each (32.9 inches tall)
GEOLANDAR M/T(R) G003 | Yokohama Tire

Compare that against Falken E rated LT285/70R17 MT's at 63.3lbs each (32.9 inches tall)

Or Falken Wildpeak AT3 E Rated LT285/70R17 at 58.9lbs each (32.9 inches tall).

You might run your own comparison for weights of 275 Falkens vs the competition. Above is comparison going to a taller / heavier / mud terrain tire.

If you are in a place that gets a lot snow, IMHO, an AT tire makes more sense than a MT tire. Where I live, we get maybe 1 good snowfall a year, and it's gone in a week or less.

dont forget the P265 only has 14/32 tread depth vs 18/32 in C or E

Can anyone confirm the tire weight of Wildpeak AT3 285/70/17 E Rated (#28030612) at 58.9 lbs vs. the C Rated version is listed as weighing 63.7 lbs (#59000350).

Not sure how the 6 ply weighs more than the 10 ply?

came across a set of Falken Wild Peak A/T 3 W at $500 debating if I should buy them or not. New listed on FB market and wouldve them installed at a shop probably about 100-125 for install. how do you like them so far

I like them at 32 psi. They've been good on road, offroad, and in heavy rain. Quiet enough and they look great, but the sidewall tread is difficult to shine if you care about that.

Tire Size

For anyone with 285/70/17s

The correct tire to order is 117T SL(Which is same as P?). I went back a ton of pages, but just wanting to confirm before ordering.

Thank you!

So all of you in this chain running AT3w’s don’t have your steering wheel wobbling off at highway speeds? I just put on 265s on some method 701 wheels and after 2 balances, the thing is gonna give me nerve damage in my hand.
