New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Even if they were the same price I would have gone with the Falkens. I have now had both and like the Falkens much better.....the lower price was a bonus....:thumb:

Found a problem though. In a 285 they only come in a P metric and an E load. The KO2 comes in a C Load. [emoji20]

Ah yeah. Wasn't thinking in that caveat. For stock tire size, it's hard to justify.

285s changes that equation for sure though as I would never put an E rated tire on my 4Runner.

I wouldn't either. Looks like I'm back on the KO2. I think the GY Duratracks come in a C as well but I heard the sidewalls are fragile.

It doesn't appear to be, check this close up picture post out
apohl17 might be able to comment more on that, it's hard to see the side wall patch stippling's from that angle but the others inside patches do not

I was set on running Falkens, but that was one of my only concerns. After talking to a friend that had them I came to the conclusion that the siping wasn't very deep. And they lost a lot of their great traction capabilities after several thousand miles. I ended up going with the new Grabber ATX, and have been very impressed so far.

he KO 2 in C load is a 2-ply sidewall tire. So is the Falken but they also claim to weave their 2 plies so as to mimic 4. No idea if it makes a difference.

The Falken and the KO2 both have great sidewall protectors across the board, unlike tires such as the Toyo AT II.

I cannot tell 100% from the pic, but your friend's tires seem to be being destroyed by too much toe. They look low for 6000 mile tires and the edges totally do not look right. Of course, I can be totally wrong as well! Toe, even if a little off either way, can eat tires for breakfast. That's for sure.

Any lift? Alignments? Coil changes without multiple alignments?

I am at 8+/32nds and doing just fine still.

As for wear, it is entirely a function of use. Discount Tire has both the Falken and KO2 wearing extremely well on average. Mine? Neither the KO2 nor the Falkens can make it past 25 as all-use tire.

Also, over my first 4000 with the Wildpeaks I lost a ton of tread: 2+/32nds but that was due to 600 miles of Arizona and Utah deserts or 15% of total (when people say 90/10 then really mean 99/1).

Since then, with a more typical on/off road distribution (actual 90/10 and a lot of that on milder Montana trails), I am averaging 4400 per 1/32 instead of under 2,000 per 1/32. Snow/frozen Moab conditions are not hard on tread either.

The new General may be a great tire, I am making no claims about that one. It looks like the new DT-only Goodyear tire, a close rival of the Falkens.

What I am saying is that I expect the Falken to do fine until 6/32nd and maybe 22-23,000 miles and I won't wait much beyond that to replace them anyway at about 5/32nds or anticipated 25k.

A person who stays on pavement or drives mild for tires terrain can easily get 50k from any of these tires that we are discussing. In the desert? Nope.

Your picture of the Falken's looks like your tires are improperly inflated/poor alignment and therefore the uneven wear.. I have 23k on my Falken's and they aren't even worn down that much yet

How are they in the rain and slick after that many miles? Seems like the k02s are ok until they have some miles then lose a lot of traction. I'm looking at 275s so not many options.

I about 20k on mine. They still have plenty of traction. I don't think I have ever notice any loss of traction in rain. I think I can only recall one time where the truck was scary and that was on a horrible iced over overpass.

The picture of the Falkens aren't my friends, they are ones posted by another member here several posts back. They posted that picture and said they were at 6k miles on them. But my friends did get chewed up a little before she thought and hoped they would.

Thanks, thats good to hear. These are quickly becoming my top choice unless something else comes out in the next year or so in the 275 size.

What's up guys. I am the guy with the "worn" 6k Falkens, seemingly the topic of the night. The picture was taken on a cell phone, and we all know how phone cameras feature tiny 4-6mm, (basically fisheye) lenses. I haven't noticed any uneven wear with these tires in the last (now) 7k miles, and just went out to measure tread depth across the entire width - a bit over 12/32". Now, doing some math, and assuming these started at a full 14/32" as per the Falken website for 265/75/16s and that I have a 1.5-2/32 loss every 7k, I'd have another ~30k to go until these tires start to get to roughly 6/32 range. Which, definitely isn't getting to the full 55k mileage warranty as others are finding, but for how much snow, ice, and salt I deal with on a winterly basis, I kind of expect it. For the price, you still can't beat these IMO, and unless something else comes out down the road, I'll be buying another set of these once I finally wear these out years ahead. Hope this helps.

Hey, we already sent you off to an alignment shop :lmao:

Thanks so much for chiming in, mine started at 13/32 not 14/32nds so your wear may be a bit better. You might be getting as much as 7000 per 1/32 which is possible if you do not do much offroad.

Fantastic in rain and snow, I'd say still just as good as when I got them a couple years ago.

The 275's a re a C load, but weigh 57 lbs while a 285 KO2 in C load weighs 51 lbs. That's a good bit of weight to save for a bigger tire. That's the point I'm stuck on ATM, ill need some upgraded tires over my SL 265's for a big trip I'm taking in June. Do I get the bigger tires, save some weight and deal with some rubbing. Or get the(INMO) best sized tire for our truck, add some weight and save some money.

Why cant we get a 265/75R17? I think that would be perfect for our trucks. Ive heard the 34x10.5x7 fits fantastically, but they are 340$ a tire.

34" sounds unlikely. 265/75r17 would be 32.6" which would be perfect, and certainly rub less than 285/70, but as you said, there is not such tire size.

The KO2’s come in a 34x10.5R17. That’s what I was referring to there.
