One the real old Jeeps before the days of Improved machining the axle end float was adjusted by gaskets under the spindle,

I forget right off hand what the min spec for float was but the max allowable was .088,

while no specifications where given for the newer axles regardless something to check when tearing down,

Grease is not interesting,

Working the lubricant into the trunnion bearings,

While shown here is a conventional hand pack I have found that you can just run a bead of the lube around the back side off the bearing and spin it in the race and it will work its way thru,,,

On this note be sure to get the proper trunnion bearing, with the correct thrust angle,

While for instance there are bearings that will fit they do not have the "proprietary thrust angle for this application,

Now this older Wally axle did have a correct thrust angle on the bearing for this application,

the Newer Wally axles do not, so make sure your getting the proper bearing,

These types of contact angles are for load in the other direction such as in a wheel bearing, but these trunnion bearings are loaded of course ( for the most part) a different direction, Radial load and axial load,

Then of course the bearing preload of 12-16 lbs measured without the wiper seal installed, just as the knuckle begins its sweep,

Then Fill up the wheel bearings, adjust the wheel bearing preload to ???

I will have to double check but OMW said torque to 40lbs and then back off 1/6 of a turn ?

So When inspecting the Wally axle months later I decided to do a air bleed down test I had heard about, that was done back in the day by military mechanics

Rigged a little fitting and regulator and stuck 5 psi to it and darned if that lil Jap axle I mean Wally axle hold a pound of air pressure, with the OMW goop

not a whole lot you can do about this but try to smooth it off as best as possible as mention by OMW

Intermission is almost over

Now this grease can be used in other wheel hub applications, this 1995 Ford Ranger, same wheel seal, exact , some things never change,

And since this grease is pretty much incompatible with any other type of grease, it is required to disassemble the locking hub and clean it,

Actually this Ranger/Explorer hub is well sealed,

so Old School goop in a newer Ranger, any much newer than this the wheel bearings are not serviceable ,,,

Removing spindle, a lot of time see these spindles hammered from removal, this tool works slick or use a block of wood as to not bugger up the spindle, can make bearings difficult to slide on and off if it is beat directly with a hammer,

This Ranger had a metal clad spindle seal, which is a bit better the other style is just a molded rubber seal, a area of concern actually for me if it would contain this semi fluid grease, but does the job, but a seal like this (metal Clad) bit better,

Now Granted Wallys Balls on that old nasty mini yota truck where about the saddest , grooved pitted worn out things but it still kept the semi fluid grease in them,

Still a acceptable level of discharge from the balls, Class 1 if you want to get all technical about it,

Now not to say that these domestic axles are better sealed and the Integral wiper Dana wiper sealed better, ( because that would be blaspheming)

after months,

Sure you have nothing on your 6 year old ball Rixxer, but that is not so good dirt is being wiped in the thing if it ever would have been off road,

But you didnt let me finish the intermission and posting picts of the Trade secret super goo in the Ford Ranger pile,

And as you can see 4 runner folks, Rixxer is getting desperate, posting pictures of the Axle before I worked on it, that the owner had been filling with 140 W oil,
and pictures of the Trashed Core axle I got just to measure, and compare,

And it is important that this grease stays contained, this Trade Secret Toyota Super Goo, TSTSG is about the nastiest , most disgusting vile stuff known to man,

Absolutely disgusting, It stinks, sticks to stuff like you wouldnt believe, just horrendous,

A properly functioning, set of balls will discharge, and coat the bare steel, but not drip

A improper non discharging set of balls like you have pictured do not provide protection from the elements, also dirt, water and contaminates get inside the ball with your "Fixed approach"

And may look nice but not work, as long or as well,

No Rixxer its better to have properly functioning fully discharging balls,

1966 Dodge OE grease, Rebuilt in 2010, just needed seals,

Now thats a good run, factory OE Goop, Described in the manuals as Short fiber grease,
A form of the TSTSG,
