Just a few Questions from a new guy.

I have an 06 V-6 sport ........ Is it just me or does 5th gear seem a little too tall .....I feal like around town in fifth im lugging the mtr sometimes when the revs are at like 1,500 rpm at say 40 mph ??

I pull a small camper and I was wondering do runners have a tranny cooler or should I invest in an aftermarket one ??

Does anyone know where to get yota oil filters on line for a good price??

The 5th gear is a bit tall but this intentional to get good mileage on the highway. If you're towing, then just keep it out of 5th.

The V6 4runners do NOT come with tranny cooler. Only the V8 models come with it standard. Therefore, if you're towing, then get an aftermarket one...most popular is Hayden.

I agree the 5th gear on the auto seems too tall around town, and boy does it love to jump to 5th as soon as it can so you feel like you are bogging it down, and it just upshifts at a hint of more gas. I have a further problem in that in 5th overdrive at low speeds 40-45mph the overdrive wont lock up and it shudders like the tranny is slipping, been like that since new, so now I do 40 or 50, never 45mph!

The flipside is excellant highway gas mileage, I had 30k service on saturday and got 22mpg actual between filling up last night, a trip to Charlotte today incl the 8am and 5pm stop start driving a filling up again tonight.
 
i think part fo what you are feeling is when the computer turns 2 cylinders on.

I forgot how they explain it but basically unless you romp on it your engine shuts some off. Which increaces gas milage.

Uhh...i think that you got the wrong manufacturer....

Chevy, Jeep, Chrysler, and Honda have the cylinder deactivation engines...Toyota does not.
 
hmm thats is what sales guy was telling me. maybe he had wrong info. 1/2 stuff he said was BS i know. I assumed this was true stuff.

Wow, there really are fruit loops like me out there that spend nights blogging cars.
The tranny issue has been an ongoing issue that I have given up on. I am no mechanical genius but I know when something is wrong, and have done numerous tests to simulate the problem. There is no doubt it is an electronic control over the overdrive that is amiss. As soon as you give it some gas-lift revs-shifts out of overdrive- the shuddering stops, lift the throttle- slips back into overdrive-shuddering starts again, then as your speed increase to 50 it goes away.
I also thought at one stage it could be the tyres but have experimented with different pressures, rotated, balanced etc and the problem persists.

The last time I 'lost it' at the dealer was last thanksgiving when the service manager offered to take the vehicle for a few days and lend me his, but that he could not offer any assurance that he could conclude that it needed a new tranny as there were no tsb's for this issue and there were no errors logged, nothing loose, no leaks etc, so they could not do anything about it. Everything else about the box is fine, smooth shifts, quick response etc.

My last say is that I plan to get a new vehicle next year, either a V8 or a 2nd hand landcruiser. Ofcourse I will not feel quilty selling this vehicle as I dont pay attention to this issue anymore, I drive around it, and the dealer says its A okay- so nothing is amiss !?

Im with you on this my runner has the same little slight sort of "shake?" around town in fifth around the 40-45 range and I don't like that. many years ago my dad had a chevy van that did the same dance around the same speed in top gear and he had to buy a new slush box at around 50K.

I have bin keeping it in forth gear around town and it runs better I just shift it up at around 50mph. We have many hills around here so I think its better this way.

When I pull my camper (aprox 2,800lbs) I keep it in fourth gear unless im driving on a long flat road going above 65mph.
 
hmmm, didn't realize that 5th was an issue on the 2005 models. maybe having only 4 gears on my 2004 isn't so bad after all...

Though 22mpg would be nice. I'm averaging about 17-18 for the last 2 years...

Wow this is news to me. the 2006 V8s come with a tranny cooler?

Well I have a 2005 5 speed and have never had any transmission issues. Although I do have a V8 so maybe the extra torque/hp keep it from bogging down.

And I agree 22mpg would be nice. 17 to 18 here as well, but again it is a V8.

I think that ALL V8 4runners since 2003 come with tranny cooler.
