I'm from South Al and I am purchasing my first 4runner tomorrow. I found a 99 Limited 2wd with 68k miles for $8700. I think it is a hell of a deal as it is in near perfect cond. I dida carfax and everything checked out fine. I am driving about 200 miles to pick it up and just wanted to know if there was anything in particular I needed to check out since I won't be able to take it to my mechanic before I buy it. I know my way around vehicles so I know the main things to look for, just don't don't know that much about 4runners. Any quick replies would be greatly appreciated and I look forward to many more posts.

too much for a 2wd. about $6-7k that should go, for you should check squeling from the rear end= bad 3rd member, timing belt change, tire dates, rust on the rear bumper.

I agree with John, no more than 6-7K even with the super low miles. As far as what to look for, rear axle seals leaking are the only thing I can think of on a Runner with such low miles. Good luck in your search.

Welcome!

I agree with the two posts above. Even though it has low miles and is in good condition, not having 4wd should bring the price down to around $6-7k.

I'm surprised at how well the 3rd gen holds value. The only thing to check specifically for on 4Runners is the rear axle seals. If you see any oil on the inside of the wheel or on the backing plate of the wheel, then you have a leak. It is very common so be sure to look with a flashlight.

What the bank will lend, has no bearing on the value of the car and what it is worth. Pay the $8700 if you like, but as we have all said, that is way too high.

Bank will loan $10,500 so $8700 isn't so bad to me.

The people running the banks are idiots and got us into this huge financial problem we are in now. Cars are not going for anything close to blue book value now. Better to search eBay for completed auctions to see what they are really selling for.

Ultimately, it is worth what you (or someone else) are willing to pay for it.

However, I agree with the others. I'd offer him $6,500 only if it is very clean. Then I'd wait to see what he said.

Of course, it is probably too late. You really should have given us more time to read your post and reply.

I just paid $7500 for a 2000 limited sport fully loaded 4X4 in excellent condition and I thought that was a stretch, but it had new tires, brakes, axle seals, timing belt, water pump, etc, all replaced about 5 months before I bought it, so I made the stretch.

$7700 final dollar. I think it was a good decision. So far I absolutely love it. I took it to my mechanic when I got home and he he said everything looked almost new. I got the man as low as I possibly could and almost walked away when he said he would take no lower than $8000. I will post some pics when I get them loaded but it is white with the gray bottom. Thanks for the input and good suggestions.

did you do that because we said to? congrats, hope you like it.

i dunno i paid 12k two years ago for my '01 Limited 2WD. what he paid sounds about right to me. there is not many 4WD 4runners out here in Alabama anyways and from checking autotrader and other sites most 4runners still go for about 10k. You got a good deal it sounds to me
