New guys needs help

New member
New guy here looking for some help. I'm looking at purchasing a 1st gen 4runner. It will be a daily driver and occasional trail rig for hunting and camping. What are the known issues or desirable options I should look for? This is what I'm looking at:

1989 Toyota 4runner 22re 5sp

We went to the Seattle Auto show yesterday and my wife fell in love with the new 4runner so that will probably be added to the garage soon.

Check for rust in the fenders behind chrome trim. peer into rear fenders from stowage areas in interior panels near the tailgate on both sides. look for Bondo repairs in rear fenders.

head gasket is the Achilles heel for that motor so you could have a pressure test run.

It doesn't look saggy so you might ask what suspension upgrades have been made.

Its a pretty solid model. Price is on the high side but fair for a really nice runner. Good luck and WeLcOmE!!!

Thanks for the tips and I'll definitely use them. I thought the price was a little high. I had planned on offering $3k and working from there. Or should I start lower?
 
3000 is the top end of what I would pay for a gem. But gems are getting hard to find and that one looks nice. go low, worst case you pi$$ him off and you have to look elsewhere, best case you got money in your pocket!
 
that is a super nice looking runner , i have a 93 model 22re in a 4x4 truck and it finally needed a head gasket at 160k. 22re is a fine little engine

i only know truck prices for florida but that seems like an ok price for such a nice truck.
hey if the wife likes it that surely adds value :D

i got very frustrated when searching for this 95 t4r we just got . probably exactly why i have now blundered and purchased it. after calling and calling and emailing and calling
some more what i bet was 100 plus ads and only one count them 1 reply

not even shifty car lots would return my calls or mails. :wtf:

was awful and got so bad i would offer more coins than they asked and they still not get reply:violin:

if they listed location i would drive there and no yota could be found. very very frustrating
these were current ads too. in gainesville jacksonville valdosta

i do feel some better now that i have ranted but i still have problematic 95 3.0 and now my woman adores it , so i must get it repaired :hiding:

Another New Guy

I am looking to get a 1st gen runner for commuting and some 4wheeling. I have always wanted one and since my car was hit while it was PARKED,RIP. Anyways, I find myself in a position to get one.
I have been doing some research but the amount of info out there is overwhelming. Can someone tell me what are some of the problems that can be encountered with the different models or somewhere that has this info? Are there problems that weren't mentioned for other models that I should be looking for?
 
Like any Toyota truck, frame rust is always a possible problem (unless you're in the southwest).
The 3.0 V6 has a history of HG problems.
