New head or old head, Improvement or FAIL??

Hello 4runners:

I currently have the JBL Upgrade System option with 10 speakers and Surround Sound in a 2003 Limited 4runner.

I am hoping to put a AVH-P3400BH head unit in place. I plan to use the existing amplifiers, speakers, adapter, and wiring harnesses to integrate it into the existing amps and controls. This unit will add bluetooth, HD Radio, XM Satellite Radio, and IPod interface for apps and hands free phone use.

I currently LOVE the sound from the surround sound system. Will the new head unit take advantage of the all the existing system has to provide and sound great with the new features available, or should I scrap the idea because it will sound worse?

I can't comment on the integration with the JBL amp etc, but I can say from my experience with my 2008, Non JBL, I replaced the factory deck with a Pioneer DVD4300 and with steering control integration and stock speakers. This deck made the factory speakers come alive. Typically the 2 weak points in factory systems are power and speakers. I have simply replaced the deck in this and my 03 Corolla with aftermarket Pioneers and was extremely pleased with the outcome. Sure both would be better with external amps, subs etc. but just not in the cards right now.

You need to get the amp integrated harness. Honestly your going to end up replacing the speakers any way. I'm a car audio installer and replaced tones!! Of these speakers and it will happen just give it time. I'd do it you'll end up with better audio output and control.

If you get a new head unit you'll need the TATO harness

Disclosure: It payed someone to install it.

There were two integration add-ons. One allowed for the use of the steering wheel functions. The other integrated the the new head with the factory amplifier and speakers.

I learned that JBL Synthesis System was designed (or consulted by) "Lexus Mark Levinson Audio Systems". I was told that he focuses the sound in the front of the vehicle; hence the 6x9"'s in the front door and the component system-like tweeter separated as well. The Surround system simply focuses the sound in the front of the car. The rear channels are there to "supplement" what can be created in the front of the vehicle.

...so, I was able to reproduce what the surround system did by pushing the "fade" forward toward the front of the car. Also, I enhanced it by separating 80 Hz and below to the sub-woofer. I read the sub-woofer in the Toyota design is in place to merely enhance what the bass that the rear passengers might not hear being out of the "focus" area. Cutting all but 80HZ and below to the sub "freed" up efficiency for what the rest of the rear speakers where actually able to handle.

In my opinion, I was able to reproduce the environment with the new head that was originally intended with the design of the factory "system". To do otherwise, would be to replace everything else (amps and speakers) and re-tune the new design to the vehicle.
