New idea for exhaust (maybe)... has anyone tried this?

I know a lot of people have done the exhaust setup with the muffler immediately after the cat, and then a downpipe. It gives an agressive tone, maybe a bit too much, and I can only assume it reduces back pressure on the engine (which the 3.4 does not like, or so I've read).

Has anyone ever done this setup with the stock OEM muffler? Maybe it would keep the quiet sound, and enough back pressure, but still be a bit louder and more aggressive, much like the ISR/deckplate does compared to a CIA.

Thoughts?

Also, how feasible is it for a side-exit pipe, say, in front of the rear driver side tire? would it have to be routed under the frame?

keeping the stock muffler and cat wont change the sound, dont know about rerouting out the side but my opinion that would look terrible

Haha! that is the worst idea ever known to mankind! Just kidding. i dont really see how routing the exhaust differently is going to make a difference in sound. the side exit thing just would not look right. You are right, you would have to bend it down, then back up and out.

oh you could notch the frame for it..... but it wouldn't be worth it. If you want to make an improvement on the exhaust flow, you need to read up on exhaust theory that will give you a better idea of what you are trying to do. Try's the burns stainless website, they have a few good tech articles.

well, it does not really make any sense to do any of that, since the gains will be minimal, and you will lose low end torque. notching out the the frame will weaken it. I would not recommend it.

Okay, but what I am getting at is....

...ISR works by reducing the amount of sh*t the incoming air has to flow through.

...this may work by reducing the about of sh*t exhaust gasses have to flow through.

free flowing = better, no? When it comes to exhaust systems, everyone is looking for the perfect balance of performance and backpressure. Why not split the difference... less piping, more restrictive muffler?

PS, ignore the side exhaust idea. I don't want to do it anyways since I am keeping the running boards.

well, the piping isnt the restriction, it is the muffler. and cats. You could technically not put any exhaust pipe on after the muffler, and you wont see any difference, with the exception of carbon monoxide poisoning

You also have to remember that it's not all about free flow. The engine does need some sort of backpressure in order to work properly.

But in the end, whatever you're going to do with the exhaust, you wont' gain any power. All it will do is make your 4Runner seem louder. That's it. All the time and money you put into this will net you maybe (stress on maybe) 1 hp. Save your cash for a supercharger. I've seen one locally go for ~$1500.

Supercharger is out of the question for me. Too much of an investment to my only vehicle. I'm not trying to make it any faster... the only reason I tinker with my car at all is for enjoyment. I enjoy the feeling I get when I romp on the gas pedal and I hear the intake roar. I don't care that it added 2.43254 HP... that's great. I probably lost more with increasing my tire size. I just want my truck to look good, and to feel great about driving it.

EDIT: on second thought, if my car had a perfectly functioning SC setup I would be as happy as a child molester at recess... (sorry for the bad joke). The point is that I don't trust my own technical skills to be able to fine tune and perfect the setup without worrying about reliability and maintenance issues.

just the supercharger alone is adequate for most. Its only about a 2 hour install, with simple tools. to be honest with you, the most time consuming task of all is removing all of the belts, and installing the dynamic tensioner
