New Key Help

I bought a used 2005 4runner and only got one Key and a FOB with it. I want to get a second set. I did they check to determine whether the key I have is a master or not and it apparantly is not according to this video.

Also, it won't lock the glove box.

I was hoping to buy a key and FOB set online for a lot less money, but am unsure now since I don't have a master key. Any thoughts? The local locksmith wasn't sure whether he could use the key I buy online in their programmer. He offer to clone a master key for $55, but that won't work since I don't have a master.

Any suggestions? What have other people done?

If your key doesn't open up the glove box, it's probably the "valet" key.

When 4th gen T4Rs came off the lot, they would give the buyer 3 keys, 2 with the black rubber, 1 with the gray one. the 2 black ones had all the functionality of a master key, while the gray one would be the "valet" key that doesn't give access to the glove. You'll most likely have to go to a dealership to get the master key replaced. You could get a master key replicated, but that would require the original master key in the first place, which isn't an option for you,
 
Has anyone tried any of the locksmiths that claim they can reflash the ECU to its preprogrammed state to accept new master keys?
 
WOW. I did not know you could reset the immobilizer system. That is a pretty well kept secret. When I bought my truck and only had 1 key; I bought a second chipped key as quickly as possible since the prevalent notion is you can only register a NEW master with a master.


This looks like you can actually wipe the slate clean and start a new. Print this off and take it to the dealer.

Yeah, there was a big issue for I think pre-03ish... vehicles that could not be reprogrammed. So much so that Toyota will STILL give you ONE replacement ECU should the system ever need to be replaced and it has not been done so on applicable vehicles.

But most of our modern imobilizier systems can be reprogrammed. Its just a pain to do it from scratch without a master key. But it is possible with a factory scantool as far as I've done it.
 
I talked with a local locksmith. He says he can do a immobilizer reset and can then program new master keys. I'm going to get 2 master keys and then have him reuse my old valet key. Sounds like it might be $150-200 including the keys. The dealership wanted $250 to just reset the immobilzer unit. Keys would be extra. They say it takes 3 hours... I find that hard to believe.

but I did use a master key while programming it. I'm not sure if that will change the outcome.

The dealership charged me $20 to cut a master key using the VIN number, not by using a prior key. I had brought in my own key. The guy said since I didn't buy their key, there was no way he could guarantee it would work. Since I programmed the key prior to cutting, the engine started right up.

Keep in mind that the master key also opens and closes the back window, which the valet key does not.
