New keys wont with ignition? HELP!!

(I have a 98 4runner btw) Hey guys I lost my key for my 4runner so I went to the dealership to get 2 made. They work in the doors but not in the ignition, meaning that the lock cylinder was replaced right? Where can I find the key code for the replaced lock cylinder so I can get a key made for the ignition too? My dad is gonna kill me I got to get this taken care of if anyone knows where I can find this code let me know!! Thanks guys.

Unless you can track down who replaced the cylinder, you're probably either going to have to have a key manually made ($$$) or replace the cylinder again.

I don't understand how your previous key worked for the door and the ignition and now they don't.

The old key did work with the doors but the key was bent. Do you think that may have something to do with why it works in the cylinder? OK so if I get a new cylinder does everything connect pretty simply? And what do you mean by having a key manually made. Thanks btw

yeah something isnt adding up with the new keys or your cylinders. if the key you lost worked everything before. there should be no reason the new keys cut from code wont work it all. you may have a poor cut that was done on the keys you just had made or the ignition cylinder is worn down (not that common)

My last key was able to actually be pulled out when I was driving. So maybe the ignition cylinder IS worn down???

When I bought my 98 t4r 3 years ago it only came with one key. I had keys made, but they did not work.

If you looked at the old key from the side, I'd be willing to bet that it was bent or more specifically, twisted.

I'd bet the new keys are straight- and therefore, not working.

Used to see this all the time when I worked in a dealer. The keys and ignition are so worn that a new key wont turn it. It works in the doors because the door cylinders probably saw a lot less use than the ignition and aren't nearly as worn out.

It's not too uncommon for an ignition to get worn down, these trucks are older and years upon years of use would cause that to happen especially if the PO had a heavy keychain. You mentioned the old key could be pulled out while the ignition was on, right?

If so, you have a very high chance of someone else's 4Runner key of same style to turn the ignition. So play around with other keys, you just might get lucky. If once the cylinder turns you must take it out immediately and run it down to a locksmith along with one of the new keys or the glovebox lock. There is a code most of the time on that lock that tells the cut code. Call AAA if you have it or if one of your buddies have it and they don't mind hanging out long enough to sign some papers for the locksmith. Trouble is they will not make a key for you if the title is not in your name.

I agree. With my '98, I had several keys made and I had to physically wear them down to get them to work in the cylinder. Also, some wouldn't work because they were copies of copies of copies and the condition and quality wears after each copy.

Use brake cleaner and spray in the lock key hole and work the key in and out. The tumbler sections are stuck with worn key metal and dirt.

Take the steering wheel cover off. Put a rag on the floor and spray in the key hole with brake clean. Then put the new key in and work the lock. Then spray more brake clean and work lock (put key In and pull out and rock up and down) some more. It will free up the tumblers and all the new key to work. I had new keys cut for different vehicles and this method has not failed me yet.
