Hello all,

A little about my 4runner and myself.
1995 3vze 4wd, 233,xxx miles

I stupidly bought the thing, without reading about the 3vze enough first, for $2200. The stupid Peruvian guy I bought it from assured me "Iss a good truck mang" and when I called him about the interstate issue, "Well I sold it as is. I already gave somebody I owe money to, the money". The truck is very clean, but we didn't take it out on the interstate on the test drive. It was late, my g/f and I had driven 3 hours to look at it, the interstate was 20 minutes from his house. We just shoved the money at him. This is my first Toyota, and really, my first truck that's been in my name. We got it out on the interstate on the way home and it wouldn't do over 55mph. Let the broke, now broker, college student tears begin. After doing some looking around, I found I had low compression on #5 and #6 (GREAT:flipoff:). So I rip this absolutely retarded engine apart (I normally work on older BMWs, VWs, and newer Fords when I was a tech. at Ford through Jr. College.), take the heads in to be machined, checked out. Burned exhaust valves! Nice! Get those replaced, bolt everything back up, engine is running fantastic. Nice and in time, all the vacuum lines are in place, urrbody happy. Hell, the 4wd, AC, and power steering even works great. :yo:

Alas, my dilemma. The thing does not want to go over 70mph. It runs good (a tad sluggish compared to the fabulous 4.6L's I'm used to) up until then, but it does not want to go over 70. It's almost like it runs out of guts, that's the best way I can put it. You really have to be in the pedal to get it there and then it will not go over that. It isn't overheating and it isn't surging or misfiring or anything when it gets there, it just won't get over 70mph. No codes, might I add.

Things I have just finished doing:
-Headgaskets, all other relevant gaskets in kit (OEM Toyota, w/ slipperplate). Compression on all cylinders is at ~160psi
-o2 sensor (denso)
-timing belt
-water pump
-Bi metal switching valve (w/e it's called) fix with 5/32" aluminum tubing.
-Rebuilt injectors (I did it myself, confirmed to have been done right)
-New wires, cap, rotor, plugs, set timing at 12*
-Checked AFM, o2 signal
-replaced fuel filter, fuel pressure is at 40psi (which I found a really neat little fitting to check fuel pressure without needing all of that stupid banjo adapter stuff).
-Vacuum at idle is around 15-16" (a little low, right?)

I'm leaning more towards a clogged cat. I haven't actually taken it off to look at it. I can only work on it during the weekends at my parents because I'm in engineering school and I especially can't work on it the next few weeks due to finals:sobbing:. I was hoping in the meantime you wizards could enlighten me on whether you agree, what you could suggest for a repair (gut cat, test pipe? I live in AL, no emissions.), and if you've experienced this before. I've seen a cat do this before, but I also had a very nice diagnostic tablet at Ford when I was troubleshooting.

Thanks!

I owned a 89 4x4 SR5 extended cab pickup with the 3.0, manual trans, 31\10.5\15 tires from the factory & that's about all the faster it was. & yes it did come with the 31's & geared correctly for them. The original owner special ordered it that way, as he was a volunteer fire fighter. (He was a long time family friend)

If you take the cat out, you will see that it makes very little difference. They don't call them 3.SLOW motors for nothing. I did gain about 3 mpg & a couple mph with a straight pipe, & flow master muffler + I installed manual locking hubs.

What tire size? What gears in the diffs? Auto or manual?

The 3.0 is probably the lamest V6 ever made, but you should still be able to cruise on the flat at 75 or 80. The A340 series automatic transmissions are incredible power hogs, so that could be part of the trouble, but maybe it's slipping? Oversize tires on stock gears could also be trouble, neither the 22RE or the 3VZE likes to get too far out of the ideal gearing. And a clogged cat would definitely do it - take it to a muffler shop, they can test the cat on the truck and probably won't even charge you.

70 MPH? Bwuahahahahahahaha! You try pushing your 4Runner to over 70 and your gas mileage will be about 6 MPG.

I have 33"s on my 93 with stock gears (soon to upgrade to 4.88), and I usually cruise at 65 MPH to keep the gas mileage somewhat in the teens.

Question - did you put OEM spark plugs, wires, etc in your 4Runner? I found out the hard what that these beasts DO NOT LIKE anything other than OEM plugs.

Don't give up on your Runner, and post some pics. If your set on having something with speed and acceleration you are going to be sorely disappointed.

If you want a truck that will get you to obscure off road destinations, and back home again - you're going to love your 4Runner. Mine got my wife and I from eastern WV to Moab UT, and home again.

:worthless

When I first bought my '93 3vze I was having issues with it too. When I would drive it around for a bit and get it completely warmed up, it would NOT start again if I killed it, until everything cooled off... I was thinking it was ignition related or something like that... Well, I live in Oklahoma and we don't have any inspection laws, so I went and had the cat cut off like I normally do on every vehicle I own, and BOOM! Started right up and ran so much smoother. That cat was CLOGGGGGED up. I highly advise you to get rid of the cat if you can get away with it! Mine will do 80+ on the highway if I am pushing it, and I haven't even done the full tune up yet like you have, just cut the cat off... and I'm on 33s. Normally though, I don't push it past 65, or MAYBE 70 if I'm in a big hurry...

Yeah, so really need to know gear size, tire size, and auto/5spd.

I'm guessing auto + low gear size + 31 or larger tires.

a) the transfer case shares hydraulic fluid with the auto tranny. It sucks the power up. Best dollar for dollar upgrade is to convert to a 5spd. Find one with a blown hg, swap the 5spd and then sell to salvage yard...will probably make money.

b) everyone wants bigger tires but the factory had to gear these things to 4.88 to run 31's. Mine had factory 4.10's, AT, and 31's.......it was slow.

c) 95's had updated sw that reduced hp by another 10hp just for emissions. Due with that knowledge what you will.

d) convert to manual hubs and reduce the driveline drag you currently have but you have to get out in the mud to engage them.

The 3.0 can do a good job. It can last thousands of miles and generally go fast enough. Its a late '80s emissioned v6. There's better stuff now, but its not you're rolling a 3 cyl Geo.

Geez my 22r goes faster than that haha.

But really the 3.0 kinda sucks, from factory its not gonna go much faster than that with the auto and stock gearing. I can get my 3.0 4runner up to about 90mph in 4th gear (manual trans) and a regear. Its pretty sluggish otherwise. Future plans are to drop a 3.4 in it and call it a day really.

Ya in my. 5 speed stock gears one size up on tires I can easily do 90 if I wanted to. I'd never want to but I have no problem doing 65-70mph and get 22+ mpg
