New Member, New Trail

Hello All, I have done it. I've left Ford after 25 years and purchased a new 4Runner Trail. I pick it up at 3:00 today and I am stoked!! I started looking at Explorers. I was disappointed that Ford had turned it into a minivan. Well, not really that, but certainly into a more urban/highway vehicle. They are nice cars and certainly Ford knows their market. I wish them well, I just need a better choice to serve me in my fly fishing adventures. I actually could have made due with a SR5 4WD. I just really like the way the Trail looked and truthfully, I feel more confident off road in a truck I know was made for off road. I love all the features and am looking forward to a new beginning, so to speak. I don't know much about 4Runners or Toyota in general, I do know this. People that own 4Runners LOVE them, they seem to drive them until the wheels finally fall off. That's the love I hope to find in this vehicle. Welcome to the forum, Fly-Addict. I think you're gonna love your 4runner. I have a Ford and two Toyota's, and there is no comparison - the Toyota's make me smile every time I drive them. (29 years ago I bought my first Toyota. Out of a total of 3 owned I've never been disappointed.)

Hi Buchaja, Thanks for the reply. I'm just sitting around waiting now. Got my old Escape cleaned out and ready to trade in. I'm really excited, nothing like getting a brand new vehicle, especially one you are really stoked to own. One of my best friends is a citrus grower, he drove Fords for as long as I knew him. Last year he got a smaller Toyota pick up, I think it is a Tacoma. He loves it and is replacing all the farm vehicles with Toyota's, he just bought a new Tundra for his Foreman. I'm all ready looking at some stainless running boards and new wheels!! Happy Day!!, Fly_Addict

Welcome Fly Addict! And I welcome myself lol. Just got a 2010 4R TE myself. What year is yours, and any plans on modding? I'm planning a lift and slightly bigger tire, running board, Rack, the usual stuff.

Hello #1, I'm getting a 14, Trail. I don't really have any big plans for modifications. I probably will add some nice running boards. Maybe after a while some new wheels. I was thinking of a small lift, but I don't want to stiffen the ride or mess up the fuel mileage. But in time, who knows, the car crazies here may have me in a monster truck 4Runner!! Welcome aboard to you also, gonna be a groovy ride!!

Hey, I picked up my new 4Runner, I was so stoked!! So were the sales staff. This was the first one of these they had seen. It is slick too!! I can see myself driving this for a long time. Today after church, I took it out into the desert to see what it would do. I am very impressed. First I did a few hills and some easy stuff. I ended up on dirt bike trails where they were open enough. No need to scratch it up just yet. Plenty of time for that. I didn't get into any of the new computerized stuff yet, I may have the dealers go over that with me again. This thing is a mountain goat though. I don't think I even spun the wheels more than a couple times. Awesome grip. The gearing is great and the shifter works really well, I just need to break the habit of driving with my hand on it. That doesn't work off road, every good jolt and you shift up or down depending on the bump. So, I guess I'm starting to understand why these vehicles become so loved. Definitely going to get a set of running boards, maybe some stainless and black trim. Any suggestions of brands? I'll try to get a couple pictures downloaded. Thanks, Allen

You might want to read up on some of the descriptions of crawl control here on the forum. Some are hilarious, and quite accurate in describing how unsettling it can be the first time.

Just FYI, I actually thought my 4runner was defective when I first engaged it. I suggest you put in on medium range or higher instead of low initially. It has proved useful though, especially downhill .

Thanks, I'm looking forward to trying everything. Gave the stereo a good workout today. Off to check out the headlights now. Just ordered a personalized plate, FLY RNR. I'm just having too much fun!!
