Hi 4Runner Friends, I don't own a 4Runner yet, but am in the market. Mechanics tell me to stay away from the V6's, but it looks like the recall was just for the 3.0 V6 head gaskets? Prefer a 2.7 5-speed anyway, but thoughts on the 3.0 and 3.4 V6? Are the gaskets still an issue or, if they've been replaced are they dependable?

The 3.4 is fine, great engine. The 3.0 is too, but it's got a problem with where the exhaust pipe crosses a little too near the block, leading to heat issues and the gasket blowing right there, at plug 6 I think. Then I've heard tell of some motors not getting the correct head bolt torque settings from the factory. Either way, as long as the recall has been done and you don't drive it like you stole it, the 3.0 is plenty reliable.
The 2.7 is a good motor too, though. Hard to really go wrong with any of them, IMO.

If you stayed away from all V6 4runners you'd have slim pickings. Yes, there are 4 cyl and some 8's but not many. I really like the 3.4 V6, it's a great motor.
