New member, what is a fair price for a leftover 08?

Hi everyone, I'm a new member here, my old man is deciding whether or not to pull the trigger on a new 08 4runner (must have been sitting on the lot for over a year now - still has only 40 miles).

I have a few questions I thought I'd ask you guys.

1. first off, pricewise what is fair? there seem to be nearly no limiteds on the used market so figuring out pricing is kinda iffy...he will be keeping it for a long time so resale is not much of an issue besides getting a good price at purchase time.

08 Limited 4x4 V6, has JBL and the XREAS suspension, MSRP 39537, dealer is willing to let it go for ~32400.

While these suvs hold their value well, it can be hard to justify paying that much for a car thats almost 2 years old at this point. I doubt the dealer will go down much but I figure I should be shooting for 29k?


2. Just to confirm, you CAN run the 4runner in 4hi on dry pavement as long as the center diff isnt locked, correct? Will this do any long term harm - my dad has 180k on his highlander right now?

3. What kind of mileage are people seeing when they are running in 4hi? I figured I'd look at the V8 rated mileage and thats 14/17 with fulltime 4wd so I figured the V6 in 4hi is pretty similar maybe a tad better. My Jeep has full time 4wd and is rated at 15/19 but gets pretty low in city driving but easily hits 22 on the highway with summer gas.

4. Any reason at all to get an 09 or even an 10 model? He doesnt care for new fangled techy features much.

1) I'm not good on the money deals. $32.4 may be a little high (but very close), $29k? No way IMHO.
2) Yes. You can also use 4lo on the pavement (without the diff lock, of course.)
3) Mine does 17-18 in my version of city driving while in 4hi.
4) Unless you want the '09 TT edition or an all new '10 then no, an '08 rocks. Take time to read the book about VSC, ATRAC and VSC off etc.

Keep in mind that an 08 is already a year old, and the dealer would pound you for that if you had to trade it or sell it back. Definitely make sure you're getting a better deal than you would on an 09.

Go to edmunds.com and find out what the invoice price is including the destination charge, and then subtract any applicable rebate. Last I saw, Toyota was giving $2500 on an 08. Then, I'd still subtract another one or two thousand dollars. Again, the point is to do a better than you would on an 09. Then again, if it's the only one like it for 100 miles and it's exactly what you want, I wouldn't hold out for a rock-bottom price - I'd be willing to give a little more since it's hard to find. I'd still want a fair deal, though.

thanks for the responses, im getting mixed signals from the 'service department' claiming excessive wear and tear if 4hi is used 'too often' on dry pavement though that honestly sounds like someone over there is thinking you're driving a tundra where something WILL break if you try and do that...

Last I saw, Toyota was giving $2500 on an 08.

where's that, exactly? AFAIK, there are NO incentives on 08 4runners... in my area, at least...

They're not thinking about it before answering. 4hi in the 4th gen is fine for full time use; in fact a v8 uses the same t-case, axles etc except for no 2hi option. So a V8 T4R is always in 4Hi or it's like a V6 T4R in 4Hi with 2 extra cylinders, however you want to say it. Unless you find a T4R enthusiast in the service department I wouldn't expect to get a good answer. The 4wd is awesome but not understood by many. In defence of the service guys; they deal with Taco's, Tundra's and many other vehicles. They can't know verything about every model...

The owners manual, articles posted here in FAQ and other places etc all talk about the Torsen center diff and it's incredible versatility (including dry pavement use).

My dad went ahead and got the 4runner after me telling him to look in the manual, not listen to the stupid service/salespeople who dont know their products...

Looks like a good ride, he's pretty happy with it.
