New member WTB 1st Gen

Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and decided to join because a few months ago I stumbled on an 87 4runner on craigslist and instantly fell in love after doing some research. I've had a 2000 Tacoma and loved it and both of my grandfathers swore by toyota, so I've always bought toyota's. Unfortunately I am active Army and am about to deploy so I have to wait, which is probably one of the hardest things to do because I am holding off on buying one until I get back. This is so I can have the money to do whatever I want to my future 4runner. I have been looking at 85 4runners because I like the solid axle and don't want to have to deal with the swap. Are there any suggestion/tips anyone has as far as what to look out for when buying 1st gens?

Timing chain replacement, rust, maintenance, the usual stuff. You won't regret getting a 4runner.

Thanks. How much rust is too much rust? Where are the areas I should pay close attention to as far as rust goes? I would rather avoid it altogether.

You're in Arizona. You don't know what rust is .

Check the fenders, inside and out, and look at the frame around the shock mounts and body mounts. The backside of the frame is not boxed - if you can, stick your head up there with a flashlight and look inside the frame. That's where the rust starts. Any truck that's spent it's life in the southwest is not likely to have much, if any.

Ah I didn't see you were from Arizona! These truck tend to rust most places in the country. Luckily I am in a climate that doesn't really rust out vehicles. ...and they don't salt our roads, which is most of the problem.
