new mod = Tail as Turn signal + extra back up led Mod

Mine should be here within a couple days. I have a guy at work that deals with diode dynamics and he set me up with a pretty sweet price on the full set so I couldn't resist

Personally I also like the amber turn signals....
I am switching soon to LED bulbs for the turn signal function .
The fact that the turn signals are Amber adds to safety since it is immediately recognizable .
 
Any updates from the guys who said they were getting this? Specifically, do the extra 2 backup lights make a big difference?

This is my driveway which I back up into every day. Extra light at night would help a lot. But I'm not really wanting to add extra accessory lights if possible.

diode dynamics has two pictures on their website, one with stock lights, one with the extra two lights, and it sure makes it look like I'd get a lot of extra light. Although their 'stock light' picture looks like it has less light then mine does stock.

Have had it installed for 6 months. Huge difference in backup light output. I also replace the bulbs with led. Highly recommend if you need more light

For the time and money investment, its hard to beat this upgrade.

Heavy_GD, those pictures are great, they definitely show a big difference. I'm going to order today. Lots of cars have red turns indicators, so I'm not too worried about losing the amber.

At around $80 for the modules and bulbs its a pretty cheap (and quick) mod.

I had the same concern as I'm a fan of amber rear turns, but they are more than noticeable.

i typically don't care for jacking with lights, but i am really digging this. mainly because you can get some more reverse light. need to save this thread.
 
If you're really looking for more light in reverse, why not start by replacing the reverse bulbs with LEDs? That's surely simpler than modifying something which may not need a mod. It's also half the price of the tail-as-turn kit even before you start adding DiodeDynamics ridiculously overpriced LEDs.
Also consider the reverse light reflector is designed to project light behind you where you need it. The rear turn signal is an indicator light, and has no such reflector and will throw lots of light up, out to the side, and behind you. Lots of light wasted in a place where you don't need it.

My suggestion is JDM ASTAR 912/921 800 lumen LEDs
Here's what they look like in a well lit parking lot, they provide more than enough light to see through the rear camera.

I pulled the trigger on the DD kit during their black Friday sale, and after waiting 5 weeks to get it, I finally found time to get it installed this week.

I had already upgraded the factory backup light position to the Phillips 921 LED lights, but all that really did was make the light more white, it really didn't give me any more usable light. As you can see in the pictures, I now have a lot more usable light. And as the previous poster said, the light from the old turn signal spot is more dispersed, which is exactly what I wanted. When I back up my driveway (see post #23) I really want to see the sides (trees) and ground more.

So far I'm very happy with my $100 spent.



*These were taken in a dimly lit parking garage. I'm going to try to get some in a completely dark garage too.

Yea the Philips LED's are crap for light output. I tried them in the 194 variety for the interior lights and DE3175. The 194s were a small improvement over stock, but the DE3175 was actually dimmer than stock. I swapped out to the JDM ASTAR and there was a huge improvement. IMHO the Philips LED'S aren't worth the time or money.

Yeah, just comparing specs between oem, the Philips offerings, and JDM Astar, it definitely pays to go with with higher output quality. Amazon reviews are pretty solid too.
 
I have it as well and I'm very happy with it. I've been a fan of Diode Dynamics for some time, they make good stuff.
