New Muffler: Why?

Many people throw aftermarket muffler's on their 4runners. I guess I don't really understand why. Is it just for the throaty sound, or are there actual performance reasons? Just curious what motivated others to do this mod...

better sound better flow and a wee bit of power 4runners really dont like it when u change the stock size pipe to a bigger one
 
Mine was falling apart inside. You could see where the baffels were. The case was wrinkling and also was beat from rocks. My replacement is smaller and doesn't hang as low. It has an low tone and added a little power.
 
My stock one rusted out and like said before the Magnaflow I put on it didn't hang down as low. I didn't notice any difference in power or MPG's though.
 
mine was falling apart. got a littel more zoom with the go pedal, but didn't notice much of anything else. little louder than stock. if it was to loud I would have taken it back off and tried something else. wanted TRD like Brian2son but couldn't find a good deal so I went with Dynomax by walker. its ok. works and since its on I am running it.

Yip. It bolts to the flange after the cat and before the rear O2. You just have to get a new crush gasket for that flange and an O2 sensor gasket to put your O2 in the new tube. It's ~$10 for both.

I got a great deal on mine used and I love it, but I wouldn't spend $700 on a new one. It's cool but not that cool.

I put a Magnaflow on mine just for the sound. However, on my sisters truck, the muffler was falling apart, and we went with a Walker Quietflow Stainless muffler. It worked perfect, it's a complete bolt in...fits exactly like the factory unit. And it sounds basically like stock. Maybe a teeny tiny more growl.
 
I typically just do it for sound but I notice my stock one looks like it will soon split at the seam so will throw one on soon.
 
I'd want it for sound and for whatever little power gain I can get. There's just something about that throaty growl from an aftermarket muffler/catback that I love. Gonna get a TRD catback sometime in the future.
 
I wanted to get rid of any restriction in the system. The stock pipe on the 4 cylinder is seriously small. I changed to performance headers with a 2.5" collector, then a 2.5" cat, 2.5" inch pipe, and then to top it off, a 2.5" muffler to completely remove any smaller diameter pipe for better flow.
 
I did it because the OEM muffler its too big and mine was dented up and had holes in it. I used a 14" magnaflow and it tucked up nicely above the bottom of the frame, but its all dented up and smashed from rocks still. Its cool because every time you dent it more it changes the sound. :)

Mine was 2" I believe.

I know it was much smaller because I took an exhaust tip from a Limited and it was wayyyyyy too big for my piping when it was stock. Clear inspection of both pipes showed that the stock 4 cylinder piping is smaller. No way that stock on ours is 2.5"

The 2.5 pipe I have now easily fit over the old piping with room to spare
