New Nissan CVT transmission??

How in the hell does this thing work? From the commercial it is showing that it never shifts. Is this just Hollywood hype, or is that how it runs?

Honda has one of these aswell. My dads 04 Civic Hybrid uses it.

My moms RX400h has that transmission. Toyota/Lexus uses a CVT in their hybrid vehicles. It never shifts and you hear the engine rev louder as you go faster.

I have trouble believing it NEVER shifts - I think nissan has a small lockup torque converter that is used at very low speeds before the CVT takes over. So technically, isn't that 1 shift to the CVT. Once using the CVT it never shifts, it just "slides" to the optimal ratio.

The CVT is like a snowmobile transmission. This stuff is nothing new, but they were never built strong enough for use in vehicles.

In my opinion, Nissan has done an excellent job with the CVT in the Murano (towing capa 3500lbs; big powerful VQ engine). I do not have any other experience with CVT. (doesn't audi have 1 as well?)

I think its great and you will see more of these to come. If set up correctly your vehicle is always performing at it max. performance for the situation. Pretty cool actually ,. Ford also offers one as an option in the Ford 500.

The new 2007 4Runner with the V10 option will have the CVT transmission as well.
