New one on TPMS

Driving home in the pouring rain yesterday and my TPMS light comes on.

Head into the dealership this morning to figure things out since all 4 tires were properly inflated. Assumed one of the sensors had failed. Nope, turns out the spare was low on air. Go figure.

Anyhow, figure I'd share.

I didn’t think the spare had a tpm sensor on these vehicles... was the spare swapped at some point with one of the regular four rims?

I’ve never seen a 5th gen with a sensor in the spare. What year and trim is yours? Our 2013 SR5 didn’t have one.

TPMS was added to the limited spare several years ago. I don’t know the exact details.

There were threads on this before. Some 5th gens do not have the spare TPMS sensor, but I believe there is still a spot for it in the computer. So if you add one it will function. I'd verify this though before adding one.

My limited has one for the spare. If I don’t have one in there the tpms light will come on... just replaced it yesterday.

No, thanks! It is headache to have TPMS in spare if you are not using it in tire rotation because at least twice a year as temperature changes you have to climb under there to adjust pressure and prevent dash light. My 2013 doesnt have TPMS in spare, so I overinflate that spare and check it once a year or so. If I ever need it I'll release extra pressure once it is on the axle.

****update****

After my initial post I have returned to the dealership with the same issue 3 more times. The dealership told me my right front tire was the culprit but they were unable to find the leak. We decided to not rotate the tires so that we could isolate the tire with the hopes of finding the problem.

Finally on the third visit I had a new advisor and he took me out to speak with the technician. I explained this was my third time out for the same issue and he decided to spend some additional time on the issue. After watching him painstakingly review every inch of the tire with soap/water and a keen eye he takes the tire off to break it down and see if he can gleam anything else from the inside. He accidentally rotates the wheel and notices some of the soap trickled on to the inside of the rim and decides to watch it for a sec. All of a sudden the bubbles started and the culprit was captured, a hairline fracture of the rim. Go figure.

An hour later a new rim is installed and off I went. Stock TRD rim by the way.

Same thing happened on my FJ, all tires up to pressure, finally decided to check spare, it was down in the 20’s
