i just purchased a 2001 SR5 runner last week. i love it, however on my way home the check engine light came on along with the trac off light and the VSC light as well. I know i need to take in it to get the code, but i am wondering if this has happened to anyone with all three lights comming on at the same time. I dissconected my battery and it cleared all three lights for now. I just wanted to see how soon they would come back on. Any ideas. Also when i break or slow down i hear a mechanical sound. It makes a sound similar to the antenna moving up and down? Like something is charging? i am new to toyota's so any info would be appreciated.

You'll have to get the code.
It is common for all three lights to come on when there is any sort of problem, even just an o2 sensor fault.
can't really say about the noise you hear........... maybe brakes??????????

Check that your gas cap is tightened until it clicks. A loose cap can cause all 3 lights to appear - it has happened to me.
As for the sound -not sure. I believe that there is an brake sensor that makes a sound under the hood (it sounds like the antenna motor) which is normal

I'm new here, spent the last week reading all 4Runner forums to try to answer this question that is bugging me about my brake accumulator... so here it is:
I just bought my 2002 4Runner couple months ago, and about a month ago i started noticing a funny sound from under the hood.
It turns out the noise comes from a brake accumulator (i've been told thats what it's called; a cylinder shaped part next to the brake fluid container with "Nitrogen..." written on it.)
Every few brake pumps that cylinder will start buzzing and few seconds later a loud relay on the other side of the engine compartment will turn it off.
Is that normal
I've been told that it is; that the cylinder, or accumolator, keeps pressure on the entire brake system and after few pumps of the pedal it kicks in to regenerate the pressure.
But I just don't think it was ever this loud, or maybe I just started noticing it.
On the attached photo you can see what i'm talking about. The right arrow is the buzzing accumulator, on the left is the loud relay that starts it and shuts it off.

You'll love toyota's... except for small repairs, the truck will run until you sick of it.
My friend has 01 and he too has all 3 lights on. Turned out to be a lose vacuum hose (right next the battery compartment)! Easy fix!
Have you check the Timing belt? Toyota's use timing belts and it needs to be replaced every 60 K miles along with the water pump, cam and crank seals.
You might want to drain and fill oil and replace filters.
What is the mileage in your truck?
My friend has 01 and he too has all 3 lights on. Turned out to be a lose vacuum hose (right next the battery compartment)! Easy fix!

I believe starting in 98 or 99, the timing belt replacement is every 90K miles. I know the OP's '01 is for sure on the 90K mile schedule
@thor and nissanh, you bring up good points. she's got 142000 young miles. it was one owner and had a carfax. they took it to a toyota dealership which is great, however they dont have a record of replacing the timing belt. it would be rare for a runner to go 140000 without one right? what should i look for in a failing TB? i also put gas in it for the first time, so im hoping that i didnt screw the cap on tight enough. The lights have not come back on yet after a day of driving and i know im not completely out of the woods yet, but hopefully its something minute. thanks for the input.

No one has referenced the sounds yet so I hope to help. Mine does the same thing when I start it up or sit at an idle. My Toyota mechanic told me that some 4Runner have a auto leveling system installed in them... first time I heard of that also. I remember being in a friends Ford Expedition back in the day and I know it had an auto leveling system. The sounds are the same so that's what I'm figuring the sound to be.
As for the CEL, check the code. Mine goes on and off two or three times a week. I think it's the charcoal canister (search it) and decided it's not worth my time or money to get it fixed yet.
Welcome to T4R.... definitely the best vehicle I have ever owned... and that includes my 2006 Ram that I bought brand new.
