New Owner-Any tips?

Hi. I just got my first 4runner (2002, 154k miles), and just was looking for any tips or any advice. I did a lot of research before and heard it was a very reliable, and easy to maintain car, as well as safe. What are the most common problems with this car? How often should i expect maintenance? If freeway driving easy, safe, and comfortable? Really any information that a new owner should know would be appreciated! Thank you.

Congrats on getting your rig! I'm new to 4Runners as well. No major problems I'm aware of and you should be able to get a good idea of the maintenance schedule in the owners manual or probably a few threads on this forum. As far as how it rides, really depends on your car history, it's all relative. Should be right in there with others in its class.

I got the two year Toyota maintenance, and then upped that to 5 years... stupid? I initially turned it down and they kept cutting the price until I couldnt NOT get it!

we just bought ours certified preowned and i went for the two year maintenance as well. im still a bit conflicted on the decision but i want the best for my new baby ;-)

The only thing you need to look out for with 3rd gens is the frame rotting out just in front of the rear axle, especially if you live in New England like me where salt is abundant. For some reason Toyota has recalled the Tacomas, Tundras, and Sequoias for this issue but not the 4Runners. Wash your undercarriage, hit it with some Fluid Film, grind and paint and maybe even LineX your frame, but that's honestly the only Achilles heel these vehicles have.
