New owner with a 96

Well, I got me a 96 SR5 5 speed manual with the 3.4. I'm loving it so far but have a few questions.
First, under the hood on the driver side there is a box that has hoses that attach to the air cleaner box, this unit makes a buzzing noise even when it's not running (I thought there were bees in there) Is that normal?
Inside the rear wheel there is some leaking, I'm guessing I have a bad seal, is there only one seal or are there more? Which is most likely the bad one?
I think it has a exhaust leak but I can't for sure tell where it's at. I think its the passenger side of the crossover pipe, how hard of a fix is that?
The runner has a 3 disk CD player, but it doesn't seem to read the CDs, any fix for that?

I have had the same truck for 6 years now. I noticed that "buzz" sound. It is only every now and then, and only for 1 or 2 seconds. I don't know what it is. Maybe a pressure relief valve somewhere. It baffled a mechanic I know. I am interested to see if someone knows what it is.

Factory CD player

Thanks for the replies.
The CD player is a factory player. It has a 3 dish cartridge unit that moves in and out delivering the CDs but it won't play.
I've been reading about lifts and am probably getting front springs from a FJ80 for the rear and 2.5" spacer for the front. I don't want bigger tires I just want to be a bit higher for playing in the hills. Does anyone have that set up? How is it?

LC coils wraps give like 4 inches of lift in the back, I dont know why people keep thinking they give 3 and then get surprised when they have a nosediving 4runner.. I'd find some OME coils or a set of spacers in the back.

On the stereo, its probably just old and needs replacing. Its from 1996 after all.

I'm far from an expert but I believe you'll have a good amount of rake with that setup. The land cruiser coils are generally a minimum of 4-4.5 and sometimes give up to 6 inches of lift I believe.

And there's a lot of negative reviews on spacers. Really rough ride, wear your suspension components much quicker...
Whatever way you go is up to you just wanted to let you know.

1. its your charcoal canister, it has to do with the evap system and emissions. mine does it too. normal. there is a Technical service bulletin it to fix it, but no nothing is wrong. just buzzes, you can do some searching if you want.
2 yes rear axle seal is leaking, usually lasts 100K miles, around then expect to replace them. sometimes if your seals fail more often then its a wheel barring thats gone/going bad and lets the axle rub around and wear out a seal faster.
3 mine had an exhaust leak, was coming from the flex pipe. it connects the driver side exhaust manifold and to the down pipe along with he right side. manifold. im not saying that it in that same place that yours is but it was a big job. had to pull the head to get to it.
4 most of the time the reason y cd players dont read cd is the eye or sensor that reads it is dirty. if you are good you can take the cd player out and take it apart, windex and a q tip to clean the eye of it. ive done it a few times with ones that wont read cds and they work.

What lift would ya'll recommend?

I was planning on that lift based on what I have read on this site. If I want 2" or so, what would you recommend without putting a ton of money into it?

IF you need multi disk CD player, use a Subaru 6 indash CD player. It is 2-din and will mount perfectly into any toyota with 2-din. Toyota 6-CD indash CD players are expensive and not as good as the Subaru (Only thing I like in a subaru!)

Both CD players are made by Fujitsu Ten (Panasonic). Wiring is slightly different but it is possible to fix it. I use it.

The down side of an after market CD player is their knowbs are tiny and you need a pen to hit buttons! When you are at 65 MPH, you don't want to look at the CD player!

If you want to keep the stock tires, and just a little clearance, look into OME 906s. Those would work well on the rear. For the front, you may be able to find some 99 Tall coils on here. Both of those springs can be used with stock length shocks, so you can save some money there.
