New Rack&Pinion! Almost Better Than SEX!!!!

OMG!!!! Today, my husband replaced the rack and pinion on my 2005 4Runner and wow.......it was almost better than sex! My car has not driven so well in years!!!!!! He saved us a fortune and I knew as soon as I drove it 5 feet that he had fixed the problems. I no longer drove like a drunk driver. No longer was I nervous with the sloppy steering. I love my 4Runner and it felt so good to have my baby back to normal again!!!!

He actually laughed. I was so happy that I think it made it worth all the work he did. It had been a problem for so long and I kept thinking it was the alignment. Then we went through hell getting the correct part. So after all was said and done, I was thrilled!!!

Hi Carsonsmom, could you please provide the total cost to have this fixed when all said and done? Also, how long did it take to have this completed by your hubby & do you know if this can be done with a basic tool set? I have feeling mine is also due for an overhaul in the very near future.

We spent $377 on the rack & pinion from Auto Zone. There was a core charge of $105 but you get that back when you take the old core in.

You have to take the serpentine belt off and take the bolts out of the ac compressor and move it over to get the bolt out of the rack and pinion. Took him about 4 hours to take the old one out and put the new one in.

Once he had it in and the tires back on, we took it and had it aligned before he would let me drive it.

He used a impact 17mm 1/2 drive socket, 17mm wrench 12mm sockets and basic hand tools.

Hope this helps. You may want to buy the Haynes manual. It helps.

Thanks for this info, much appreciated! I thought the R&P would have been closer to the $1000.00 mark and more labour intensive, good to know!

I don't have pics of the old one. I was messing around with the camera when he had installed the new one.

Had I bought the part from Toyota, it would have been $1,300
