New Rear End

Well, oh well..
I finally got my 4r back from the shop. It wasn't happy news. The rear gears were CHEWED bad. that's where I was getting that big loud whine from. So with a new rear end and a new set of bearings and seals+a new water pump it left me $2300 deep.
Unfortunately I didn't have the time or knowhow to fix it myself. *sigh*

But it's good to have er back, that's for sure. LOL all week I've been taking my dad's truck (new F-150), and it sure was weird being back in a smaller vehicle with 1/4 the power! ound:

CHEET BALLS! Glad you have her back, but for that price you could have just bought another 4runner! How many hours did he have into that? Thats only 500 in parts.

What gear ratio do you have in that?

The answer is was to many hours. Unless he installed an arb locker while he was at it. Let's say parts were. 500 and shop rate is. 80 an hour that's 22.5 hours into a 15-18 hours worth of work

I would have driven down to you, buy all the parts, and install for $2000. :bigok:

Way less. 4 into the rear end , 4 TOPS for the water pump especially if your not doing the timing belt.

I think most of us have been taken to the cleaners by a mechanic at least once.

Way back several years ago now, my brother catastrophically overheated the 22RE in my first truck, melted it down. I didn't know what to do about it, so I took it into an independant Toyota/Lexus specialist for a crank-up rebuild. $4500, that cost me, when a brand new long block would have run me maybe $2000 and rebuilding it myself would have been even less. But I didn't know that at the time, so I paid the guy, and learned an expensive lesson. Sounds like class just got out for the Snowman, but he'll know better next time.

This is true. Something very similar happened to me with my timing belt and water pump job a few months back. I will never take anything to a shop again, no matter what.

Live and learn,don't take it back to that guy. There are lots of honest mechanics out there ,find yourself one.

ACTUALLY, unfortunately, it was the old man's decision. My pops was convinced that it was the way to go- to fix it and keep it as a "long term investment". I tried so hard to convince him that i'd be better off selling it. Hell, I even put it on CL to see what kind of offers I'd get... I was getting offers meeting people in person for more than I bought it for (I bought it for 3600). I was offered 4K. But he wanted to keep it. So, now-I'm pretty much married to it. :madgrin:

I think the way to go would have been to get a used third for $75 or so and just run it. Or get your own gears and install kit ($250 on EBay) and find a driveline shop that'll set them up for standard labor (probably another $200-$300, depending).

But, I guess as long as the old man is footing the bill, your way works too . Out of curiosity, do you have an itemized receipt from the place? I'm curious what they charged you for parts and labor. I wonder if they actually bought that ring and pinion from Toyota. :jaw drop:

I sure would hope on OEM for that price. I'm sure Toyota wants about $600 for a ring and pinion.

It was $900 for a 7.5" 4.30 set, last time I checked. Nobody but Toyota makes it, so of course it costs an arm and a leg.
