New Remote Start for 4th Gen

FWIW, I also run an Avital alarm/remote start system on my 4th gen. It's pretty basic and was dirt cheap but it works and has been in there since 2008 without an issue. The one thing I have never liked about it is the range has never really been good. I may upgrade some day.

Neither one of my 4runners use a bypass that requires sacrificing a key. That's old technology that I wouldn't recommend using unless that was an absolute last option.

I bought the Avital 4103LX. I dont want to mess with an app, as convenient as many may find. There are many times that I don't have my phone with me plus the service is spotty underground. I like the Toyota key fob, and plan to keep it at home if I need it. But the Avital remote has great reviews as far as build quality and range. It seems it can cover a 1500ft range which is plenty for my needs. It also isnt as bulky as those 2-way, LCD ones with the obnoxious nubby antenna that would annoy the shit out of me going in/out of my pocket. I don't plan to upgrade my alarm on this rig either.

I'm curious what immobilizer bypass you have used on your 4Runner? Was it easy to install and program? Did you need a dealer?

I installed a Viper 791xv in my 2005. Its alarm and remote start which I bought used (NIB) off the forum mainly for the remote start but the alarm function is nice as well since I park outside at night. I see you already purchased your remote start but I wanted to add that most alarms have anti-nuisance functions and various settings that can be set to avoid the battery draining and going off with fireworks or exhaust rumbles from passing cars. Most have the ability to disable certain knockor vibration sensors as well if you know you are going to a fireworks show. It's just that most people dont know this or their installer failed to inform them.
Beyond all that...

In my 2005 I used this bypass:
DEI 556U immobilizer

It may or may not work with your system but I think Avital is a DEI brand as well and in my research it was the car that mattered more than the remote start model. It was plug and play for me with the key below


and this key:
#4D-67

I programmed it and then sawed off the actual metal key part and put that in the immobilizer bypass and then stuffed it up under the dash and tied it in with zip ties. This alleviated my fear of someone breaking in and opening the box and having a full key. I think I also had to ziptie the key-head in the box as well to keep it from moving around since the metal part was no longer attached. It will all make sense once you have the box.

I bought a couple of those keys actually, they come with programming instructions that are spot on and they can also be found on the forum and web. But you must have an original key to be able to program it yourself...so program a couple and save your original in a drawer.

Thanks for the insight, I truly appreciate it. I bought that exact same immobilizer yesterday that you listed. I also bought the same key a few months ago for spares when it was only $9. I think I may order the one with the security feature since it is only $30 more and will give me peace of mind, and think about it over the next two days until it arrives. I will just return whichever one I decide not to use.

Most likely it will work...I don't think there was much difference in those years. I found most of the information I needed and wiring diagrams and pinouts on the 12volt forums. Wire colors change sometimes between model years so just Google search until you find the wiring sheets for your model year. Lots of good info out there on this stuff.

This is one website I used. I found several diagrams and charts and compared them to double check my sources and not rely on one website for the wiring.

I would highly recommend looking into the viper car alarm systems. they offer remote start and other custom options you can taylor.

Yes, you still need a bypass. Look at DBALL from DEI.

Viper also has cellular options, talked to a guy that works at a nuclear power plant and he got a cellular remote start since his parking lot was 2 miles away out of LoS.. so providing you get signal in the garage that might be an option!

Go with a compustar cm7200 brain with some upgraded remotes.

As far as the rear window, if they and a good installer they can figure it out. I had a nice long date with my DMM, OP500 programmer, and some beer to figure out how to do it on mine.

My remote start is 2 way, about 4000ft range, and has not had a hiccup in a whole 2 ish years.

As an installer, I love compustar and highly recommend it to everyone.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but I’m having a problem with some of the products mentioned here and I don’t have enough replies to post my own. If anyone’s got time to help it’d be appreciated. I’ve installed a Avital 4105 and 556uw. The problem I’m having is with the 556. I cannot get the R/S to work , it’ll crank but won’t start. If I hold the key up to the ignition it starts right up. I’ve got the red to 12 volts, black to ground and blue to the status wire from r/s. I’ve tried all methods of wiring the antenna wire, splicing into the green/red and green/pink wires. The 556 clicks when r/s is activated. When started by placing the key near ignition the brake kill and key takeover work so I believe I have the r/s wired correctly. I do not have the tach or key sense hooked up currently but have tried that in the past. Anything stand out to anyone as an obvious miss?? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a transponder issue. Typically you cut those units into the key sense circuit then use a working key to program the transponder. At times you have to try programming it more than once as it may not take the first time. Looking at the instructions for this particular unit it looks like a key stays inside the transponder box which is odd to me and seems like a waste.

I had thought it may be transponder issue as well, that’s when I bought a second one and had the same results. I could have/should have got a different bypass but it’s a matter of principle now. I know it has and can be done so I want to learn more about it and fix it’ll what I got.

for the bypass, you hook up the red to constant 12v, black to ground, and blue to the remote start output.
the antenna ring wraps around the ignition.
i got rid of mines and did a fortin key override all, solder connection all the require wires was much better, you dont loose a key.

Fortin is what I have used in at least 3 vehicles. They usually run flawlessly for many years. I hate wasting an expensive key.

i first had the directed xk05, that thing never worked right, then i had the 556uw, worked for a few years, then the antenna ring wires broke and i wanted my key again, so i ditched that for the fortin key over ride all, pretty sure theres other out there like the idatalink, but the fortins i put in all the toyotas so far has no problems and always worked. the last one i put in replaced the xk05 on the tacoma, that xk05 always gives me problems remote starting the truck, the fortin works.

I have an idatalink ADSALCA and a viper 5806v. Handles keyless entry, remote start, security, and rear window up AND down with about a 1/2 mile range. And no need for installing a key.

If you guys are looking for a DIY install I just installed mine which I bought from 12volt.solutions online after investigating all the options out there.
- didn’t want any hack shops splicing my wires
- didn’t like paying someone for something I can do
- plug and play a must..
It took me about 1 1/2 hrs total to install outside and it was 34 degrees.
Unit showed up and had all the harnesses made up so basically you just unplug oem connection and plug in their “T” harness. Took about 3 minutes to program once all connections were made. Would highly recommend. Supposed to be a long range (1 mile) but haven’t actually tested that. It works at 200yds.... came with two remotes 1 two way and 1 one way.
You can also get the phone add on if you’re looking into that...
