New rims and tires for my '97

Hey guys

New to the forum. I have been lurking here for a while and have decided to finally ask some questions

I have been looking at some tires, 285/70/17R Cooper Discoverys and upgrading to a 17" rim. Is this going to be too massive? I want it to look amazing, but I don't have the money or the know-how to get a lift...I don't think.

You should ideally lift the 4Runner at least 3" to eliminate rubbing.
Some people have run that size without a lift, but rub during turns and wouldn't dream of offroading without a lot of rub.

The rims can also change things depending on their backspacing. If you go with Tundra, Tacoma, or FJ 17" rims like most do, you'll have to run a wheel spacer, at least in the front, to clear the upper control arm.

265/70/17, one inch smaller and one inch thinner, will still likely rub at least a little without modification, but will fit without a lift and/or spacers required

You will rub, be ready to hack some sheet metal if you want to run those with no lift

I'm glad I asked. The guy at the tire shop was pretty convinced I would be fine but I had my doubts. If I stay stock with the 16" rims, what is the beefiest tire size I could go with?

I saw a post at FJ Cruiser forums (link below) about painting the wheels...I think I might go through this endeavor on Friday.

I'll check out the instructions here. 265/75/16 is what I had before...I guess I felt like they could have been bigger. It just seemed like there was a ton of space in my wheel well. Maybe the black paint job will give them the look of being bigger.

I've ran 285/75r16s on stock height.

1). You will need to grind down the pinch weld
2). You will have some slight rubbing turning into drives on the street (especially ones with a ramp or dip)
3). You will most definitely have issues offroad unless your idea of offroading is traveling down a dirt road at which point refer to statement 2.

Look up the "deck of cards" method for painting wheels.
