Closing it off

So once you remove the rear factory bumper the plastic molding no longer works with the aftermarket bumpers... I didn't like the idea of the bottom edge of the rear hatch being exposed like that so I decided to close it off. I looked around for some narrow rubber strips of some kind but couldn't find any at the usual suspects stores. In the end I bought the cheapo vinyl bathroom baseboard material and cut it to fit. 30 minute mod job. What have others done?

Thanks yes it looks unfinished with the gap there. It's pouring buckets here in Cali today so this was just something to kill time. It actually looks much better and quite clean in person, for some reason the picture looks a bit shitty. It shows shadows that aren't actually as prevalent so while the screws do cause some creasing on the vinyl it isn't actually very obvious except in the picture. I will keep looking for proper rubber strip though as I am sure that will at the very least, feel proper.

That's nice ! Didn't Roy make you a custom long length swingout ?

It would be nice for Roy to release the other swingout for gas cans, hi lift already. !!!

By the way how is the long swingout with that weight on the bumper mounting area and the hinges ? Is there flex ?

Sucks if someone parks behind you and you need to open the trunk.

Yes Roy made a custom long arm swing out that is around 48".
There is a lot of wiggle now that I have the gas cans on it.

The last time I talked to Roy he was planning on making the accessories. I'm going on a trip next weekend and couldn't wait any longer.

After searching around for the best looking rear with tire carrier, I do think Savage is the one. It was between savage and CBI but I found the thread talking about the carrier rattling like no other on the CBI rear bumpers. Do any of you have this issue with the savage bumper and swing out? I'm also interested to know if you guys with the carrier have had any issues with the adjustability of the tire mount. I love the look when the spare is angled up, but I'm worried that the way it is adjusted isn't really solid and would eventually "slip" or wear down. Do you guys think this is an issue, especially if I were to get that PC? Not looking to adjust it all the time, probably will set it and leave it if I got this rear and carrier combo.

I've had mine on for a year at least. Hasn't budged a bit. Solid piece, no complaints at all. Actually about to fab up a fold down tray table for it today.

How often does a rear tire drag when climbing obstacles. I have seen them hit and hang up a lot on the trail.

I haven't had it hit at all. I haven't done anything super technical with the tire on since the 4r has been my DD while my other car gets a new drivetrain. I'll post a pic or two for ya to see departure angle.

On mine I would be scraping the bottom of the bumper before I would catch my tire. I carry the tire on the highest mounting holes and do not tilt it out at the bottom even though it would look a little cooler...

Here's mine. For reference, 255/85r16's; toytech boss lift with superflex springs, and it does have a subwoofer box and fridge full o' cold ones in the back. Probably 3-ish inches net suspension lift. It'd have to be pretty much a dropoff that I dragged the whole rear bumper over to catch the tire.

LED rear lights & hitch drop bar

I added these rear facing LED's (18w each) to my Savage bumper. Also picked up an 11" drop bar for towing. My rig sits 7" over stock between the lifts and tires. Add in the higher receiver point in the bumper over the factory hitch point and it required a pretty deep drop bar.

That turned out really well. Was it hard to mount the lights? Are you planning to get a swing out?

I am very tempted to get this combo. I am on the waiting list for when they bust a few more out. The other top contender is the 4xInovations rear swing out. The 4xInovations is a bit less expensive overall and has a lot of options, but I am attracted to the modular options that the Savage bumper uses. They said that other options are soon to follow. So another arm for fuel, high lift sound like they are in the works.

I know that people add Sonoran Steel rear body mounts for the 4xInovations swing out as it can and does flex into body. Did you add these to the Savage set up?

Thank you yes I'm happy with it. The lights required a little bit of engineering to mount bcs the bumper doesn't come with light adaptation. But it wasn't hard to figure out a way and it came out clean. The wiring connections are soldered and I bought heat shrink tubing from Harbor Freight which is cheap enough that I shrink wrapped the entire length lol. Ran the wire into the cab above where the spare tire hangs, then under the carpet through to the engine bay and direct wired them so I can turn them on anytime and not necessarily as reverse lights. The access points under the tailgate worked for my CB antenna wire so I was already familiar with the rubber plugs under there above the spare.

I do plan on getting a Savage tire carrier but down the road after I get a front bumper and under armor. I don't mind my spare tire under there and haven't drug it yet. It's a 'pizza cutter' size at 255/85 and I also cut and re-welded the factory spare tire elevator raising it up 2" after I added the 2" body lift. So it's decent clearance for now. But yes, not permanent. I have a daughter away at college so I have to watch my burn rate for my hobbies.

Sorry I'm not yet aware of the issue with needing to use the SS body mounts for tire carrier body contact (?) I have not come across that topic yet.
