Rear tire carrier

Finally got the rear tire carrier installed. A year to the month since installing the rear bumper. So far loving the finished Savage Off-road product once again. I hope I don't get bumper droop one or two guys have mentioned, I'll be looking out for it but I run a pizza cutter for a spare so a tad less weight than I've seen some guys hang off of it. We'll see, fingers crossed.

You'll be fine. I'm hanging 90lbs off it with my tire and rim combo. I have been for months. I've wheeled it hard enough to expect it to break. It hasn't moved.

Man, that is one clean looking white 4runner. That new swing out looks great too! Great choice.

With the tire mounted. Not going to lie it does wobble very slightly and I expect that since it is a tower design and no top brace. How about you other guys with the carrier and those huge spare tires. Do yours wobble or did you figure out how to control that?

Are you talking about a noticeable wobble in the vehicle while driving or just the tire moving slightly? Mine moves a bit but I can't feel it at all while driving. My latch setup is pretty much identical to your setup.

i notice a little wobble hitting large bumps but it settles quickly
not much movement with normal driving
my wheel and tire comes in at 75 lbs

I don't notice it wobble while I am driving, but it does move around and I can watch it. People were telling me I must have mounted it wrong but there is really only one way to put it together.

I am going to build a different setup to replace the rubber bumper and provide a firmer resting spot to cinch the swing arm to with the latch. Should help with some of the wobble.

Just slight slight wobble in the tire tower once I hung the spare. It's mild but I thought with a larger spare and weight the more pronounced it may get. But it sounds like yours is fine with the 90lbs hung.

I've got the locking handle clamped down hard I don't think I'd tighten the handle any further. I followed Savage instruction to place the handle facing inboard but I notice some folks reverse it and put the handle to passenger. I prefer having it pulling away from the hinge when locked and I'm fairly sure that was what Roy intended in the design.

The handle can flip either way. If it takes a bit of force to lock in place you've got it set correctly.

This may be a case of bigger not wobbling as much. More mass equals more force to move it. Mines pretty still on the highway and around town. Wheeling it moves around a lot but I expect that.

The first wheeling trip I did after installing it was a very hard trail. I kept looking in my rear view every minute to make sure that tire was still there. lol After many wheeling trips since I don't even bother to look anymore. As long as it's not affecting driveability I wouldn't sweat it to much.

Tongue Weight...

How much tongue weight will this bumper support??

I know the truck is rated for 500lbs tongue weight, and the trailer can be up to 500lbs tongue weight....

the trailer I'm getting is max 7000 lbs gvwr, and empty it's 2250-3200 lbs... depending on config... I figure less than 1,000 lbs of supplies...

figuring max config it's 4200 lbs with supplies... with 3975lbs for the 4runner... we are at 8200lbs ish.. without people and gas... lets call that 600lbs for a total of 8800lbs... ouch.

total the 99 is rated fro is 9200lbs... this is gonna be 'heavy'...

He said not to tow that much with his bumper, sure it has the right connections, but he flatly said he doesn't want my safety at risk and high advised against it.

he did say, it 'should handle 1500 lbs or less, no problem' but heavier loads he cautioned against.

With the savage rear bumper what size tire are you able to fit in the oem spare location?

the OEM location is not impacted by the bumper, it's still the same size as stock. you might get away with a 31.5-31.99 inch tire fully inflated, but a 32.5+ inch tire you WILL have to let some air out to fit snug.

Pretty darn convinced this is the rear bumper I'll get. Maybe even the Savage one up front too... Spoke with Roy earlier today, he addressed my questions and is quite likable as well.

If anyone has this or the front Savage bumper on a Limited with fender flares, can you please post a photo or two? I think I've only seen one of these bumpers on a Limited. Curious to see how far the bumpers extend out in relation to the fender flares...
