Now that the A/C is fixed, and the MPGs have improved, I felt it was OK to celebrate my recent promotion at work with a new sound system. Already have a nice Pioneer HU that was in the Runner when I bought it, so I picked up a 4-channel Alpine amp from my friend and bought a pair of Infinity Kappa 60.9CS components for the front and Kappa 52.9I coaxials for the rear (made sure to get the adapters for these too). I've done a number of stereo installs on previous cars so I think I'm going to tackle this one too once everything arrives. Can't wait!

Best of luck, I didn't find anything about the fronts needing them either, until I went to install my Polk components, then was able to find some threads about it. A half inch spacer did the trick for me. Also, the magnets and depth of the Polk MM speakers are actually very small, they use a neo-magnet. So I was surprised there weren't more mentions of needing a spacer for the fronts.
Will do. I've been waffling back and forth as to whether I want to do it all myself or pay someone. But I find the stereo installation process to be a great way to bond with your car! So I'm gonna tackle it myself, and I will take/post plenty of pics. Hopefully get started on Friday, or maybe after work earlier in the week.
Well the magnets on these Kappas are HUGE. So yeah, I'll probably end up needing spacers.

Let us know how it turns out. I have some very slight buzzing in the left door. Turned up the crossover on the front speakers since I'm running a sub. The Polk's sound pretty good, although I think my old Kappa components I had in my Grand Prix sounded better. Hard to tell being different cars and different speaker placement, but still.
Well, I took the passenger's side door off last night to get an idea of what I would be dealing with. There was a crappy Pioneer 2-way speaker that had been put in at some point to replace the factory woofer in front. What really sucks though is that I don't see any way the new tweeter will fit in the stock position. Although advertised as a 1", it's got a housing around it that nearly doubles its size. So I'm either going to have to mount it elsewhere or sell the Kappas and get different speakers, which I really don't want to do. If anyone has some insight it would be appreciated!
I was wondering if I could do the same thing with the Infinitys. I'm a little leery of tearing them apart though...they weren't exactly cheap.

What ended up working to improve the mileage? I read your progress on the MPG thread, just wondering what you ended up doing. Also, I replaced my front speakers with Infinity Reference 6 1/2", and they fit right in, no bracket needed. But they weren't components...good luck with it.

I took out the stock tweeter. Used a dremel to cut out the honeycomb grill in the sail panels and siliconed in the new tweeters. I'll try to post pics later. Came out pretty nice.
I thought about this myself, but in the end I wimped out and took it all to a stereo shop and had them install everything. I have to say, the Kappas sound AMAZING and I'm really happy they were able to keep everything looking stock. I think they did the same thing with my tweeters that you did.

I know this thread is old, but I'm about to purchase a set of NOS Kappa 60.9CS and the 52.9i and I am wondering if they had to use spacers to mount them, or if they worked out?
Im also curious as to how they mounted the tweeters in the front?
