New Tires

Just had a blow out on my 2002 SR5 2WD that currently has General Grabber HSTs on it. The were on the truck when I bought it a few months ago and look relatively new. I am trying to decide if I want to spend the $150 and just buy another matching tire or put 4 new, better tires on it.

If I were to put new tires on it what tires would you guys suggest? It will be driven off road about 1% of the time and I live in the Dallas Texas area so we get snow a few days a year and I might actually drive in it 3 or 4 days a year. More important than snow is that it doesn't get pulled around on the road when it rains.

I just drove a 900 mile one way trip to and from Kentucky and didn't have any problems with road noise and managed to drive through some pretty heavy rain around Nashville and didn't have much of an issue at all driving through standing water a 40 or 50 mph.

The truck does seam to bounce around a bit but I am told that's because it is a 4Runner. Not sure different tires would make that much of a difference with respect to the bounciness.

I'm not sure what tires came on the truck but the ones that are on there are 265/70R16s.

265/70R16s are the largest 'standard' tire toyo outfitted on 3rd gems. Only 1% offroad huh? Well theses have worked out well for me both on and offroad. They've (Hankook Dynapro ATMs) also done very well in wet and conditions where hydroplaning was possible. Cost about $700 at discountire. I've had them 38k and they have about 70% tread remaining. Tough choices out there, Luck!

Only 1% offroad huh?

Actually bought the truck for my son who just got his license. We don't have much reason or opportunity to drive off road. That may change but for now handling and asphalt driving are what's important.

The only ATs I personally have experience with are the BFGs, and Falken Rocky Mountain (at Discount) / Wild Peak (everywhere else)
The BFGs are the classic, and what was on my runner when I bought it. I'm happy with them, and they seem to be wearing great. Though I've never had them off road.
The Falkens are what I had on my Tundra. Great tire, smooth,quiet and did really well on wet roads. I never really had them in mud, but they did great on dirt and on ranch roads. The price on them is great at Discount. I'm thinking they may be my next set.

EDIT: Several friends (and my dad) have run the Nitto Terra Grapplers, and they all speak highly of them.

I can vouch for a set of Falkens here. I had it on my 1994 Toyota 4Runner and used them for dd and on snow during winter. Grip was solid. Ride quality is smooth and road noise is minimal. I've had it on for about 45k miles with seldom tire rotation, but I'd say I still had good 50-60% tread left before I sold the car. I personally thought they also looked very aggressive compared to BF Goodrich all terrain i had on prior.

Edit: Falkens Rocky Mountain is what I had.

Just for fun, check the age of the remaining tires via the DOT code on the tire. How old they are might factor in to the decision on getting new ones.
Btw, check the date codes on any new tires you buy also.
