New Tires

I can attest to this.

My Civic is FWD, but it has A/T tires and Discount Tire told me they would be fine in the snow.

WRONG. They blow.

Do winter tires have their own designation, or can they fall under A/T?

They can be A/T, LT or some other type of tire but in the US and Canada they also have to have the Apline Symbol.
It designates they have been tested for winter conditions.

Even with the symbol some are better than others on Snow and/or Ice.

+1 on the Falken Wildpeak AT3W's. I bought the E rated tires just get the little extra tread depth. I havent used them in snow yet, still in the 70's here in Ohio, but so far I love them on the road and they've done great offroad and in the mud. I bought them off of ebay, I think from Discount Tire. Best price and specs that I could find. Plus they look really good.

I love Cooper AT/3's. Try googling some of the tires you are considering and read some reviews. I had the Michelins before and I di not like that they lasted about 100k miles. The Coopers are made in U.S. and good for 55k. Not terribly aggressive looking but don't resemble minivan tires either. I think Discount Tires Direct is running one of their sales so you should check their prices.

I have E rated KO2s and I really notice no difference in ride quality. I run them about 40 psi. Im sure there's a slight gas mileage hit since they are significantly heavier. I think im getting about 20 miles less per tank. But those things are VERY tough. i put them through hell on my last off road trek and hit the sidewall and got a little damage but they are fine. A c rated tire would not have handled that very well.

You'd be surprised. I absolutely thrash P-rated tires offroad with no issue.

Now are we talking the deep stuff or packed, snowy roads? I have the Toyo Celsius on our Accord which I'd take 9/10 times over the 4runner for driving around in the snow on city streets.

But, I was always under the impression that while mud terrains do well in the deep fluffy stuff, their relative lack of siping makes them pretty much useless on packed roads.

I would take my 4runner out in the snow with A/T's or M/T's before any of my FWD cars with snow tires. 4WD is the shit.

I had no problems on packed snow but most of our roads get plowed pretty quickly. M/T's aren't supposed to be good in the rain either but my Dynapro's are great.

My hankook dynapros remained Excellent in heavy rain/standing water with regard to not hydroplaning all the way till the bitter 70,000 mile end! They never slid, incredible wet traction tires!!! :cowboy:

Winter tires have their own designation & have a nice sticky compound. I ran winters on my last 2 Honda's & they were amazing compared to "All weather" or "All season" tires.

I had A/T's on my T4R from 2002 until 2014 & I thought they were good at the time for snow but they are nothing compared to a M/T. My Hankooks got me through last winter with more traction than any A/T I've owned in the past.

Probably my ignorance speaking more than anything but, if I had a M/T as opposed to a A/T, do I have to sacrifice gas mileage for the increased thread?

If they're KOs or duratracs yes. if hankook dynapro atms, no. Ask me how I know...

I dont think so. I couldn't compare because I did my lift when I switched from 31" A/T's to 33" M/T's. You'll just have more road noise.

I'm a huge fan of BFG AT, and MT. You would be happy w/ ether of those.

They are not A/Ts or big, beefy and badass, but studded Firestone Winterforce are the best winter tires I have ever had. tirerack does have them in 265/75. I live in Northern New England where we get plenty of snow and often even more sleet and freezing rain. I have always been very happy with the Firestone Winterforce. I felt very safe and well prepared, they are good on snow AND ice.

Toyo Open Country AT2s. They are very quiet for an AT tire, only slightly louder than the HT at 70mph.

Plus if you don't like them Toyo will take them back with in 500 miles
