New to 2000 4Runner...Questions...

Hi,

I am on the verge of buying a 2000 4R but have a couple questions.

It has a fuel canister leak that I have found threads concerning and spoke with Local Toyota about fixing and was quoted $700 max...probably much less. This would be a complete rebuild of the line components.

That said I cane get a 217K mile model for ~$4500 with no other issues...

It is an AWD model...does this differ from 4wd or just a weird nomenclature?

Any other proclivities I should pay particular attention to?

I hope to not be an ask and bounce guy and will at least inform you of my decision if I find a different model out of this forum.

Yes the AWD is different from the 4WD. If you want to offroad it a lot, get a 4WD. If you won't be, then I guess it doesn't matter. The 4WD will just be more capable as a offroader then a AWD would. Do a search on the difference and you will get all of your answers.

Im pretty sure the 4wd is the same except they switched from the rear diff lock to the center diff lock, and the 4wd shift pattern changed.

My understanding is different. If it's a 2000 with AWD then it is a limited and may also have the rear locker. All 2001 and 2002's are AWD with no available locker. All AWD's are automatics.

This AWD is a function of the 'multimode' center diff that has an open and a locked position. When locked it functions just like 4wd, when unlocked you have AWD. An AWD 4runner is functionally equivalent to any 4x4 4Runner without the rear-locker except you get the added functionality of AWD. A 2000 Limited with the Rear Diff Lock is a great thing.

I drive a 2000 4runner with all the functions mentioned above which is how i know.

It is a 4WD. I was trying to determine by a poor photo as I forgot to ask specifically.

Now excuse me but I'm still confused. It does not have anything saying "locker" front or rear.

I've had it explained several ways.

1. In 4wd only one wheel in front and one in rear turns; the one that is gripping as opposed to a normal car that the slipping wheel turns. Lockers will lock the wheels so all 4 wheels drive.

or

3. 4wd means all 4 wheels drive when put in 4wd.

Regardless I test drove today and it did well on some dirt and sand. It was dusk and I hit a deeper rut than I thought and it rolled right over but the tow bar hit in the back to illustrate how drastic this little dip was.

Owner was up front about the fuel leak but I also found the steering rack boots torn and leaking and low power steering fluid. Made no noise and handled excellently. Supposedly the truck has been pretty well cared for. Had all the original paper work and body was 100% straight, no rust, paint 100%.
Michelin tires and alloy wheels looked less than 10K miles. Everything worked all leather upholstery 100% except driver side with the classic tear staring and this does not bother me per se.

Owner offered at $5000 I made a $4500 offer and we are both sleeping on it.

I know 217K miles is not a lot for a Toyota. I crashed my 2000 Tacoma so quit keeping it up aside from only the basics and it has 245K and only has a synchro going out...Looks bad but drives fine, I was offered $2000 for it and I was ready to junk it or keep it so putting that towards the 4R means it is essentially $2500 out of pocket.

KBB actually has a detailed condition report that addressed most of the issues this 4R has and it came up as "good" and $4475 so I'm thinking $4500 a good price.

Oh yea...has a hood scoop and roof rack...is this some sort of "sport" model?

Check out the buyer's guide for general points to look for. Take it for a thorough test drive testing different situations (eg freeway, bumpy roads, city, braking, 4 hi/lo). Getting an inspection from a shop may not be a bad idea.

I'm not sure of the market in your area, but $4500 for 217K seems a little high if it may require repairs out of the gate especially if you'll be paying a shop to do it. IMHO you should try to get him down further. You know his answer if you don't ask!

Just read your last post, sounded like you took it on a good test drive and are happy with the result. I also looked at the ad, yes, it's a sport model.

That being said, I'd still try to talk him down a little more. Best of luck either way!
