New to forum- pet peeve

So I'm new here, but not new to off road forums. I had a (hold you comments to a minimal). . . Jeep Wrangler a while ago and would regularly participate in those.

One thing that has ALWAYS bothered me is when another member asks a questions and some "smart guy" comes back with "why don't you search this topic, it was posted before".

First, sometimes the Google custom search isn't the greatest or easiest to navigate.

Second, maybe the guy posting it didn't find the full answer and he wanted a better description or to add his own small details to make sure he gets the RIGHT answer.

I guess my pet peeve is the guys who always jump down the throats of other members with some smart remark. I mean. . . is it too hard to just skip over that thread?

I guess if you take that type of mentality, once every topic is covered the forum should be closed, right?

Or how about this, once all the topics are covered why don't the haters just look elsewhere?

There are a lot of us newbies here and starting a thread and getting a conversation going is a nice thing for us,,, next time just skip over the thread that you can't stand and keep the sarcasm to yourself!

The main issue is the clutter it creates for the mods and the forum in general. When you search for something and get 6 pages of BS how do you find the answer you want? This is exactly what happens when the same question is asked over and over again.

I understand your frustration, but remember and consider the organizational aspects of operating a forum and the need to keep things in the proper category and not repeat the same thread. It's OK to revive threads from months even years ago they're still open to be revived.

Most mods and others are asking you to do your due diligence FIRST...that's all.

I hope everyone agrees with this reply and keeps the clutter at a minimum. Let's start by not giving this thread 10 pages of the forums webspace.

Suggestion: take a deep breath and start over with an intro thread for yourself and your Runner. You will learn alot here and have some fun too most likely.

Quite the second post, rex--jumping down people's throats about people jumping down other posters throats. You might want to save things like that for when you've been around a bit longer...you know, like maybe 5 posts or so (LOL).
 
Hey man! I come in peace. Actually I was looking for a reason I hear a hissing sound when I tap my brake pedal. Funny thing was I found a great answer by using the Google search. . .but noticed a bunch of people giving the guy flack. His post was useful to me, but probably would have found the answer if I dug further anyway.

Looking forward to being part of the community. Just turned 1,500 miles and loving every minute of it!

Had you done a search first, you would have noticed that there are TONS of threads with people complaining about being told to search first, when in fact they didn't.

You are right (almost). However, I was the first to complain about it because I am a new guy and am classifying it as a "pet peeve". Therefore I am kind of saying the same thing but with a unique detail!

LOL...I knew this would be fun to follow for at least a few responses. "Rex" consider this your hazing for joining the Frat. The responses can't be a surprise based on your thread content.

You will like the forum as much as your Runner. I'm new here too and follow many different sections, sometimes lurking, sometimes contributing when I feel I can.

Welcome to the forum, Rex! Now wipe that egg off your face (LOL) and show us a pic or two of your rig, bro, so we can see what you're working on. Hope you enjoy the forum (and don't bruise too easily--just kidding--we usually play nice).
 
When I tell people to do a search I do not mean on goggle, I mean on the forum itself. Check all related sections, 5th gen, 4th gen or whatever you have. Also check the tire/performance, maintenance etc.
It seems to me that everyday there is a new posting about will this tire fit or what is the best tire. another thing that gets a lot of responses is anyhthing that mentions a Jeep. This is a 4runner forum and most do not like Jeeps here just like the Jeep forums do not like Toyotas.

Just how many times, can a question like;

What size tire will fit ?
what size tire will fit with X lift ?
how do a mount my cb antenna ?
whats the best tire for X ?
whats the best oil ?
etc
etc
etc
etc
etc

be asked ????

it does get very old.. use the search,,,,,, and if the answer you didnt like did not come up, try using different words in the search, and use the FORUM SEARCH, the little box up the upper right corner, its easily found lol.
Im pretty sure, any question that you can come up with, has been asked.

What part of B-mo are you from? I use to live in Frogtown up North of you back in the day.
 
Well I tend to be that "smart guy" every now and then so I suppose I should chime in. Wait till you've been around the forum for a bit, you'll start to see how annoying it can be.

The ones about lifts and tires I tend to let go because that stuff can get confusing and there's so many different options BUT....if someone comes to the 4th gen section and starts a NEW thread asking "is it possible to change the lightbulb for the climate control display?" then I'm going to jump down their throat because their being a useless sac (that topic gets covered in a new thread almost weekly).

This then ruins the search function for the rest of us because say you want to search "how to fix climate control" or something like that. Well the search function sees the words "climate control" and you end up with 100 pages of how to change lightbulbs instead of the info your looking for.

Some of the repost are annoying- I admit. We don't need new posts about tire size, etc...

Well I guess I'm on my way to being a part of the forum!! Jumped in with both feet.

Now, I am going to search the discussions threads on gold colored badges and rims--- there are the guys I want to give a hard time to.
 
I'm somewhat of a noob myself, but I have to say that the search works pretty well and if you read through some high-quality build threads for your gen, you'll probably get all the answers you need. Once I realized I had started a noob-tastic thread regarding a BL, and a fellow user pointed me to a better thread for answers, I promptly thanked him, got the answers I needed, and deleted my thread to keep it from cluttering up the forum. That seems like a good compromise to me. Lazy noobs will keep posting repetitive threads about lift and tire sizes, but maybe we can encourage them to delete their threads once they receive answers. I'm not some all-knowing truck wizard, so I'm not insulting new people, but I bet if they knew their threads were creating a mess, they'd be willing to delete their stuff. Just my 2 cents.

Usually when I answer a question it takes me quite a bit of time to formulate a clear, concise statement that not only answers the OP but helps him too. Usually after answering it I defend my answer to several graduates from MIT currently working at NASA on cutting edge technology. The following week the same question comes up from a guy with three posts who thought his issue was the most unique problem ever and did not search. That should be the end of it but no, another poster with 15 posts answers him with wrong data. Eventually it gets old, especially the defense part and causes some really smart people to decide not to answer anymore.

Answering a question correctly takes knowledge and time while asking a question only means you can log in and type. Who are you going to be?

Wait, I thought "de-badging" was the in thing this year ?





Which always seemed pointless to me, if you don't want people to know what kind of car you're driving, why not just get a Yugo?
