New to the forum, need some help.

Hey guys,

I bought a '97 SR5 over the winter and I'm finally getting around to some maintenance.

I was trying to order a set of spark plug wires, but I'm confused as to whether the sets are for half the cylinders or all 6...
Most of the sets I looked at (Napa, Advance Auto, Ebay) seem to indicate that they are partial sets.
First off, are there any preferred parts vendors for basic OEM type items?

Second and third what would you guys recommend for spark plugs and spark plug wires?

All sets have only three wires, as the engine has three coil-on-plugs on the passenger side and each connects to a plug on the driver's side. it's called a wasted-spark ignition system because the coils each fire twice per cycle (once per rotation) so each plug fires once on its own power stroke and once on the power stroke for the other...the wasted one. So three is all you need.

As far as wires, you can use the OEM Sumitomo's from the dealer, the nGK TE-66 from Amazon, NAPA and elsewhere, or the Denso's. I have 70k on my NGK's and they have been fine. For plugs, they came from the factory with three NGK BKR5EKB-11 (3967) and three Denso K16TR11. The dealer sells Denso and NAPA and others sell the NGK's. Some argue for the more expensive, longer life iridiums. Any of the above are fine, but always dual electrode NGK or Denso. Never Bosch. I have run the NGK's in mine since the first plug change and they have been problem free.

I get most of my stuff (OEM usually Denso or Aisin) from Amazon, NAPA, rockauto or partsgeek. I only use the dealers for what I absolutely can't get anywhere else.

Go to Camelback Toyota online parts catalog or call them and say you want the Internet price.

Don't buy plugs from napa/auto-zone.

Yep. The left and right heads were assembled in different factories and each had their own supplier. We still see reports of people finding three-and-three like that when they change their original plugs at 100k+.

100k+? That's an understatement. I bought my runner in April 2011 with 216k and lagged and did my first tune up about a year later with just under 230k and I found 3 of each!!
