Yes, that is too bad. There are more than a few people that see the lack of a Diesel Engine option in the upcoming Tundra as a big mistake on Toyota's part.

Personally, I see it as a missed opportunity on Toyota's part to add a more fuel efficient engine option to the new Tundra lineup and to the 4Runner as well. With any luck a Diesel engine option will be available when the 4Runner is redesigned in 2-3 years.

I think they are playing it safe... Jeep just unveiled their diesel for the liberty, and they can't sell it in all the states because it doesn't pass CA emissions standards. Guess this was more of a marketing ploy, but in the Northeast it failed because we adhere to the CA emissions requirements. I think Toyota is probably trying to balance emissions with power, and attempt to predict whether the future will be diesel, Ethanol, or hybrids.

I agree. That, and they don't want to put ALL their eggs in one basket. The Tundra is already a titanic undertaking. I'm sure the development and manufacturing of an all new ultra low emissions diesel would be pushing it. I'm sure they want to see how many Tundras they sell and get some customer feedback on the diesel engine before it goes into production. If it cost them a few units due to the wait, no big deal, better than spending all that money on something that may not sell. They obviously want to get it right. I definitely see a turbo diesel in the Tundra's future...

From what I have heard the Liberty is getting its diesel back in the form of the new 3.0L diesel about mid year 2007. I also heard they couldn't get it to pass emissions, yet they got the Grand Cherokee to pass.

That's because the GC uses the same bluetec technology that Mercedes Benz is using on their diesel sedans, which meet the current diesel emissions standards. I guess the bluetec technology can't be used on the Liberty for some reason...

We'll just have to wait and see what happens after the dust settles around the new Diesel sulfur guidelines. The new Diesel fuel standard should allow some of the Euro spec Diesels to be used in the US with additional particulate filters.

I'm sure that sure many more automakers will be offering Diesel engines for the 2008 model year.

Its not that Toyota or any Jap manufacturer couldn't figure out how to make HP. The Jap auto industry had a collective gentlemans agreement to never exceed a certain HP threshold for any engine in any vehicle. That agreement has recently been done away with, obviously. I think the limit was like 225HP.

They must be adaptingthe 3.0 to the Liberty because as far as I know DC wont carry 2 diesels in the jeep lineup. The 2.8L engine from last year was the same Mercedes variety used in the Sprinter.

The Jap auto industry had a collective gentlemans agreement to never exceed a certain HP threshold for any engine in any vehicle. That agreement has recently been done away with, obviously. I think the limit was like 225HP.

276 was the magic number and it did not affect cars bound for exportation from Japan. The agreement was formally broken in early 2005 by Honda, however, prior to that many cars exceeded that number but were advertised at 276 only. Prime example, the 90 to 98(Z32) Nissan 300ZX TT was advertised in Japan as producing 276 HP, in the US the same exact car was advertised with 300 HP.

Car and Driver had a good article about it back when Honda started selling the Legend in Japan with the V6 advertised at 300 HP.

No, the sprinter uses a 5 Cylinder Diesel. The Jeep CRD was a 4 Cylinder.
