New Wheel Bearings - ABS Light

Hey, all.

I just got off the phone with the shop who was doing my rear bearings and axle seals. When they got everything sowed up and took it out to drive they said there was an ABS light on. They kept it another night and ordered a new sensor. The replaced the sensor but said the same light is still on. Their conclusion is that "the magnetic strip in the bearing was likely bad or demagnetized." They suggest I get a new bearing and collar and then bring it in again to be swapped out.

I'm wondering if it might not be the harness rather than the bearing. I bought all the parts, but they were all OEM. I guess the bearing itself could be the issue, but from doing a little poking around, the harness seems to be more cause for issues. I think I'd rather buy a harness and try it before a whole new bearing.

Sounds like they did no electrical testing whatsoever. Sounds like a shop that just throws parts at the problem and does no troubleshoot. That is an expensive way to repair things.

Electronics are sometimes shit. What brand did they use?

Dorman latches “work” but there are known issues where the electronics trip and set car alarms off in the middle of the night. Read any reviews on them.

Same deal with ABS. Electronics are best attempt and known they won’t work in most applications. People doing their own bearings with Amazon parts don’t expect much.

They tried a new ABS sensor and said "your original tested better anyways."

All parts they put in were OEM, bought by me.

Is it more likely that the harness was stretched and is the reason all the lights are blinking? Or is it possible the magnetic strip in the bearing was truly demagnetized?

I don't have a meter to test the harness with, but I'm tempted to just get a harness tomorrow if possible and try it. I'm going to go searching for the part number (left rear), but if anyone has it off hand feel free to throw it in here.

The FSM lists 8 cautionary notices to observe when replacing the rear ABS sensor/wiring. Have you looked at the process?

I watched Toyota rear axle bearing replacement for 4th/5th gen 4runner, FJ Cruiser, GX470, 2nd/3rd gen Tacoma - YouTube which shows how to replace the rear bearing. You supplied OEM parts, so I'm thinking the issue is with the ABS sensor/wiring rather than the bearing.

I have not seen the FSM notices. I always seem to have trouble finding that thing and/or downloading it.

I'd like to try to get someone to get a multimeter on the wiring to confirm. I hate the idea of buying another $300 bearing.

Is there some sort of relearn that has to be done to your ABS controller when you change a sensor?

This saga is getting even more strange (in my mind):

I ran up to Autozone as soon as it opened today so they could throw a scanner on it. The print out they gave me showed no ABS codes, yet I have the following lights:

ABS - solid
Brake - solid
Slip - solid
4lo - rapid blink
4wd - rapid blink
Multi terrain - blink

How could all of these be lit up/blinking without any codes being thrown?

A Google search of "4Runner ABS light on but no codes found" yields the following information.

Toyota ABS Light Reset Instructions "Toyota ABS codes can not be read or reset with a generic OBD-II scanner designed to access the engine module. To read, clear, and reset the Toyota ABS light, you will need a scanner to work on Toyota and access the ABS module. " What scanner is AutoZone using to read codes? My OBDLink MX+ is designed to read ABS/VSC/TRC module codes when I download Toyota specific diagnostics to my iPhone. I'm wondering if the scanner used by AutoZone is limited to common engine module codes for most vehicles.
