Got new wheels for the 4runner and when I asked the tire shop to use the metal valve stems that came with the wheels they said it wasn't possible due to the TPMS monitoring system

that got me thinking, how exactly does the TPMS work on our vehicle? when you rotate your tires does do you have to do any reprogramming?

You can either re-use your oem tpms or get another set. If you re-use the oem ones, no programming needed. If you add new ones, you’ll need to add program them into your trucks.

If your adding a 5th tpms, you’ll have to program that as well.

Yes, I have a set of TPMS sensors in my summer wheels as well, and the tire shop reprograms them when I swap wheels.

thanks, so if you rotate/swap wheels you have to reprogram your tpms every time?

is this something you can do at home with a tool? i got my tires through costco and they will only install the wheels on the tires (won't install on vehicle because i upsized).

Only if replacing set of wheels with summer or winter ! No worries on rotation , I stored my xtra wheels in garage & never had light come until left town & were away for 72 hrs

I have the SR5 and use 5 tpms. i've included my spare in the rotation and replaced my steel rim with the alloy rim and a new tpms for my spare.

I believe only the Limited models ECU can store 5 TPMS sensors. Any other model, can only store 4 sensors in the ECU.
