New Wheels/Tires worth it?

Hi everyone,

Haven't been on here in a while and really enjoying my 2019 4Runner (TRD Off Road). Driven mostly in Oregon and Utah. I have an Iron Man lift and rock sliders and that's about it for mods. Looking at upsizing wheels/tires but would need UCAs (they didn't do this when I got the suspension), BMC, and of course the wheels/tires. Looking at Method Bead Grip 703 in Matte Black and would go back with BFG KO2s. My math comes out to about $4,000 all in and I'm wondering if that's really worth it. My off roading is moderate and haven't had any issues, but would really like the additional bit of clearance and I think the looks would be much improved. Running stock wheels now. Also would guess that gas mileage would suffer somewhat (getting about 18 mpg now). Any comments or advice appreciated. Have a great day!

Only you can decide if it's worth it.

I drive my 4Runner approx. 1k miles per year. Quite often when people have asked how many miles I have on my TRD ORP, and find out how little it's driven, they usually tell me it's a waste. Their opinions really don't matter.

Bottom Line: If it's worth it to you, you have your answer.

I don't get the appeal of spending money on wheels since they offer no functional upgrade (bead locks if you're running less than 10 psi sure, but thats jeeper rock crawling) over stock TRD ones. I'd rather put the money towards gas or something functional. Just IMO.

I'm tending to agree since I'd need other parts as well. Haven't had any issues with my existing setup so maybe it's just cosmetics.

The shop that installed the lift said I did not need to replace them, but another shop that I spoke with said I should if I'm upsizing the tires. Maybe they would be okay? I'll check back with the original shop.

How much larger do you plan on going? A typical 33" (285/70) should be fine on the stock rim.

itll rub only because of the method wheels offset and width. if you run a stock trd off road/trail wheel theyll fit just fine on stock suspension with very minor plastic trimming. thats fully stuffed offroading btw

if youre happy with the alignment and how it drives as is, you should not need upper control arms.

OP, it depends on your lift height for UCA’s. In most cases, if you are above a 2” lift it is advisable to get UCA’s to maintain the proper geometry through the front suspension range. With the proper alignment, UCA and wheel offset you should only have to do some light front fender trimming and pushing the liners forward a bit. If you can get close to 4 degrees of caster out of the UCA, there should be no need for a BMC with 285/70-17’s and the right wheel offset.
I have a Radflo 3” lift, Nolathane UCA’s at 3.7 degrees caster, Method 17 x 8.5 x 0mm offset wheels and the front fender trim that the Pros come with from the port. I just pushed my liners forward and I have no BMC and I am still running the OEM mudflats that I like. It came out as planned with clearance in a close to maxed out articulation. GLWYD.

Get rims and tires, then make upgrades to suspension and frame to maintain your driveability, and needs (on or offroad).

Luckily, the 5th gen platform is so archaic, its pretty easy (although expensive) to just copy someone elses build if you want to take the guess work out of it.
