New Winter Setup (Tire Advice Needed) Hilux Surf

Hello Forum, it's been a little while. I have a 99 Hilux Surf with the Toytec Ultimate 3" lift. My summer tires are 285/75R16 KM2s on 16x8 0 offset KMC Enduros and they fit great. Actually I trimmed about 1/2" from my front left bumper to avoid any rubbing but that was it. We get a ton of snow where I live (Over 200" a year) and my winter setup was 265/70R16 dedicated snow tires on Pro-Comp steel rock crawlers (Same 0 offset 16x8) That setup also worked great but I didn’t like the extra weight of the steel wheels so I sold them over the summer. I picked up a set of winter tires, 265/70 on factory alloy wheels from a 4th gen Hilux and I knew the +30 offset was going to be weak sauce on my 3rd Gen so I picked up a set of Toytec 1.25" spacers for this winter....... Well I put them on last weekend and it looks terrible, the tires are too small and the rims look inadequate as well.

I just purchased a set of the Level 8 MK6 in 16X8 0 offset because I know it works but I need some advice on tire choice. I had a set of BFG AT KO 325/60R20s on my Tundra and they did excellent in the snow when I lived in NJ so I wanted to get the same tire in 285/75. After doing a little research that size isn't snow rated like most other sizes. So do I go with:

A: 295/75R16 BFG AT KOs (Which are severe snow rated)

Or

B: 285/75R16 Dedicated Yokohama Winter tires

Both cost about $200 a tire where I live.

A skinny tire is better for on-road snow driving. I'd look for tires that are in the 33" vicinity like you've posted, but skinnier than a 285.

A 235/85R16 is a common size. It's a little bit taller than a 265/75R16, but about 3/4" shorter than the 285/75R16. For serious on-road snow traction, I'd go with the 235/85R16, in a real snow tire.

On the 99 runner I just picked up a set of nokian hakkapeliitta r2 SUV.

Excellent tires for the winter my man you will own the road!


Is your 99 surf the kzn185 or the kdn185? Both excellent just curious.

I am thinking about selling mine for a land cruiser but have not been able to find the right one..may sell runner and get surf in the interim...how do you like yours?

Cool man, I think you would like them, worth a peek as they are around the same price as the options you have mentioned.

Hilux is a cool truck and I am envious. Have you swapped out the head on your 2.7?

I have not. My truck just broke 100,000 km so it's pretty fresh.
