New York State to Ban Brush Guards

I put a light bar/ front bull bar on my `04 4Runner when I bought the truck new.

The reason I put it on in the 1st place was those azzhole drivers who paralell park using other parked cars bumpers to guide em in.
We all seen it, the person backs into the car behind them, scratching or denting the other cars bumper.

I try and watch where I park, sometimes you cant avoid it.

Living in NYC, most,not all have no respect for others property.
That drives me nuts.

Just to touch on the subject of law enforcement from state to state. When travelling across state lines, you are required to follow the laws of the state you are in. Some laws they may be lax about enforcing, but they can still technically enforce them.

My father still lives in TX. He has a license to conceal a firearm. Unless other states recognize his license, he would still be charged of the crime of cencealing a firearm. Perfect example, California, where I live now.

California also enforces its tint policies, regardless of which state your vehicle is registered in.

It is also not legal to make a right on red in many states, though it is in California. Do you think I wouldn't get a ticket for doing it because I could explain my vehicle is registered in CA?


Same with smoking... In CO it is still legal to smoke indoors in many establishments (but not for long). Do you think I could smoke indoors in CA if I just explained I was from CO? Nope, not gonna happen.

In conclusion, if NY passes this law, and it does not clearly state that vehicles registered in other states are exempt, while drivng through NY you would technically be breaking the law and could be cited for doing so.

Personally I'm in favor of the proposed bill. If you want to protect yourself from crappy parkers, get a low bull bar, or suck it up. A full brush guard is overkill IMO unless you do some serious off-roading in heavy brush, which I reckon 99.9% of people do not.

Moreover, full brush guards do far more damage to other vehicles, and people, when they hit them. Front bumpers are carefully designed to crumple, spread the force if impact, and protect the occupants, including those of the other vehicle, and also to make pedestrian collisions more surviveable. Stick a frame-mounted brush guard in front of the bumper and the bumper no longer does what it's designed to do. Instead the other vehicle gets a hunk of steel through the door or the pedestrian is more likely to die (An Australian study I read suggests brush guards were involved in up to 20% of pedestrian deaths there). That is why many insurance companies will jack up your premium if you add a guard (assuming you actually tell them).

The question is, how is the NY bill going to protect those who already have brush guards, and the handful of people who really need them? As usual, the devil is in the detail.

I agree with pipspeak.

Brush Guards are nothing but mere accessories for most. I would rather have an airbag deploy according to how the manufacturers want them to.

i only use my ARB Bull Bar for a couple things

small tree's
large rocks
brush that is in the way
small audi's that are in the way

im sorry if this upsets some people, but if someone cuts me off, all i do is hit my brakes, no more swerving for me, if you cut me off and expect me to slam on my brakes and swerve, your in for another thing, suv's roll, ive been in 2 4runners when they have rolled, so i would much rather rearend someone and not have my bags go off than swerve and roll or hit them and get two black eyes from the bags, sorry, maybe manhattan can get away with the law, but having a law like that across an entire state... i dont think so, they should outlaw chrome wheels because they can cause distractions on the road... oh wait, was that as dumb an idea as banning a little extra metal on a metal vehicle, i think so...
