newbee with new 4runner

Howdy all, great to be here... Just moved to Alaska and bought a 93 4runner, was told by a friend they last forever. Didn't have a chance to check it out like I normally would being on a tight schedule, but it looked clean and well kept up for an Alaskan truck....
here's my story..... the alarm system is new (and crazy) to me
, it looks like a factory system but not sure anyway, I went to start the car to take it on the ferry to Kodiak and the alarm went off, put the key in the ignition to turn the alarm off and start the car, but all it did was start for about 3 seconds and shut off, never to start again....
I'm assuming the alarm disabled the starting system because you can turn the key and nothing happens.
tried to disconnect the battery several times and lock and unlock doors a few times but to no avail. Is there a secret combination to unlock the system, or can I disable the system to get the car started so I can ship it to me. HELP

Hi mpipitone,

My advice is to find someone who knows about/installs alarm systems and pay them to figure it out. Maybe remove it altogether or install a new alarm system.

I doubt that it's a factory system, since it's a 1993 model.

that's the idea, but it seems impossible to find someone in homer, Ak that knows too much about it, I am working with someone there and would like to get some directions to relay to him
 
Id start by finding out what brand the alarm is. None of the " I think it is..stuff" Find the alarm box and get all the info you can off of it, then google that.

Do you have a key FOB for it?
 
Try to find a way to contact the previous owner, and find from them what worked to get it running.

Both of my 4runners had aftermarket alarms in them, that looked to be disabled. I've been removing pieces from them ever since.

On a 3000gt, it had both an original and an aftermarket. I thought I had it under control, but it went off at the DMV, and they called "for the owner of a ...." to turn off their alarm. The only thing that worked on that was to keep it unlocked, which was fine here. But that was after pulling bits out, and the fuse that was supposed to disable the built in one. I never did fully figure that out.

If/when you have the time, you can backtrack the wires. With mine (these, and a few others on previous cars) most of the wiring was under the steering wheel area. At least one was inline with the wiring from the key, so unhooking that and then reconnecting the original wiring harness took care of it. Killing the power to the unit might do it too, but maybe not depending on if it fails on or fails off. And then I'd guess that anything super fancy could have much more to it.

Often there's a kill switch to the alarm. Look for a little button, likely hidden somewhere in the dark recesses under the front dash....something where the owner would know where it was, but anyone else wouldn't immediately know. Most of the ones on my car have been loose, either under on the left side by the fusebox or the right side near the radio.
