Newbie : Friend Needs Help Selecting Options For His 2013

Hey there 4Runner community. My friend is looking into buying a 2013 4Runner and has the color in mind and has test driven tons of them. The one thing he can't decide on though is the options he'd like to include on his purchase.

He likes leather seats but doesn't love them. He is convinced that his phone can provide a better nav setup than a cd based unit and is therefore not sold on including it. And unfortunately the two are linked. He can't seem to get leather without getting nav and, to get those, has to buy the premium package.

So he's asking if it's worth 3200 or so to buy the premium package simply to get leather (which he doesn't love). I assumed that there MUST be something else you get in the premium package to justify a 3k+ addition to the price.. nav shouldn't cost more than 1500 and leather.. no more than 1k.. or so I'd assume.

So what are the forum thoughts? Did you guys opt for the premium package and if so, are there any other additional features? Perhaps a nicer trim, nicer x, y, or z?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, is the nav really that bad?

Based upon your post, it looks like your friend is definitely not interested in a Limited (all the features you are talking about are standard on it). It also looks like he is not interested in the Trail edition since if I am not mistaken, you do not get the option of leather seats in the trail (given what the trail edition is intended for). That leaves us with the SR5. Given how you have described his preferences, I think he would be best off if he were to buy a regular SR5 without the NAV system and then add some after market leather to the seats. My 2 cents! Also the NAV in my 2011 Limited is not bad..I like the bluetooth integration and the other features that it provides.

Yeah the SR5 seems like the better buy for my friend as the other stuff is almost superfluous.

Does the standard SR5 have bluetooth or not? Maybe BT is only included with Nav?

Also, does the standard SR5 have heated cloth seats or do you only get heat with leather? I suppose he could have leather put in aftermarket with a heating unit but that's not exactly going to be on the same level as factory.

All options and packages are listed, by model, at Toyota.com.

Be aware that U.S. Toyota dealers are organized into several Regions, and each Regional management determines which options are available within that Region - the dealers do not, and cannot order just any ol' configuration they want.

Odd? Yes. Shopping via the internet is your friend. Many Forum members have traveled to other Regions to get the config or price they want.

Dealers can swap among themselves, but some will not, and make up all sorts of BS about what you can/cannot get.

Curious ... why isn't your friend posting?

Friend isn't the savviest of internet peoples (he thinks it's a series of tubes).

In all seriousness, you provide some great feedback. I wonder if he can find leather/non nav elsewhere and avoid paying the premium package price.
 
Not sure if things have changed on 2013 but the SR5 in 2010 had the premium package w/o the Nav. That is what have and I also agree with your friend I don't like the Toyota Nav system. I believe the new SR5 have the entune radio option with leather and such that looks pretty cool. Best of luck to your buddy. It's a great vehicle!

Yes, the Limited comes with the XREAS suspension which is significant benefit. With my Limited I do not have any of the nose dive etc that some SR5 owners on here have talked about. Definitely a factor that should be taken into consideration.

Can you elaborate on this? My friend is about as car-savvy as he is internet-savvy.. he believes both cars and internets are made up of series of tubes :)
 
(Friend here, I have no real reason why I didn't just post initially...)

Basically, I don't care for DVD based Nav, because they get outdated so easily. We live in DC, so there seem to be new roads every few weeks. I'm fine using my phone or maybe even an iPad...

I like leather seats (and heated seats are even better!), but $3200 extra for the Premium Package over the Convenience package is a lot, if Nav and Entune aren't selling points for me.

Waltuo, I definitely want the sunroof, so I'm starting with Convenience package as my "base"...

So I guess it comes down to "Is it worth getting the Premium Package if only for the leather seats?"

Limited is a bit out of my price range, although improved suspension would be nice, I don't think I need that.
 
If you don't have to have leather seats, why not go with a trail? The water resistant seats are pretty nice, and you can add aftermarket seat heaters for about $100 if you do it yourself...You get water resistant seats, sunroof, and a sweet looking truck all standard
 
Beyond the obvious suggestion of finding smarter friends, more than a few here have added aftermarket leather with excellent results for way less.
