I have 265/70/r16. I need to replace the tires. I was wondering If I can put 225/70/r16 on? Or anything smaller like 235/70/r16?

I don't drive offroad and prefer to have better gas mileage. The 4runners are the best looking SUV.

Some of the base model 4runners and 2wd models came stock with 225/75/16's. They are going to look really small on the 4runner, but you will get better mileage. If you like the looks of the 4runner I would suggest looking for pictures of 4runners with that size tire. It does change the stance and look a bit. I'm sure the 225/70 or 235/70 will work as well.
Just remember with the tire change you will have the opposite effect that some of us have with larger tires. Your speedometer will read faster than you are traveling and you will put on more miles than you really drive. Remember to take into account that info. when you calculate your new mpg.

x2, my 96 came stock with 225/75/15's and they look wayyyy too small. I'm just waiting to buy my 35's haha. To each his own i guess but just my .02 cents which isn't worth much lol But still, I don't think I get any better gas mileage than my last 2 4runners that were both on 33's. Maybe a mile or 2. And even though you don't drive offroad, you never know.. I'm just sayin stick with the 265's. That is a great tire size for a stock 4runner. But you will do whatever you want, I just hope you don't regret it.

I finally looked around and saw a 4runner with 225/70/15. It makes the 4runner look weak a$$ he!!. You guys are right. I'm sticking with the 265/70/16. After thinking about it, what tires do I go for?

If you don't drive off road (and I'm presuming this is a 2wd yes?) I would just get a decent highway radial. Also as far as size, skinnier tires of the same diameter should look just about as good but being skinniner they have less rolling resistance and are also lighter which = better MPG.
How about something like a BFG Long Trail TA in 245/75/16. Diameter will be about the same as your 265/70's (roughly 30.5") and it's 20mm (or almost an inch) skinnier.
Pretty inexpensive, too. Discount has them for $127 a piece.

Do you live in the snow belt? Is snow/ice traction an issue? If so you might want to consider something like the Yokohama Geolander AT-S.
