hey guys! new to this forum and wanted to say hi to everyone! I bought my 98 yota a few months ago and im loving her! :bravo:
i am looking to do a 3" lift. dont know anything about any of that stuff...so any advice would be awesome. got a quote yesterday for the bilstein lift kit $1500 installed. i really dont wanna have to worry about changing the tires right now or at all if possible (they arent cheap lol) and dont know anything about tires either :-(
i just want the clean but aggressive look!

Welcome, that's a nice 4runner. It looks like you have nice tires, the Geolanders are a great tire. For a lift, there are quite a few options. Personally, I would like to see someone do this lift, because I think it would work awesome for a moderate lift with a great ride.

That lift, plus removing the running boards, and adding a set of 1.5" wheel spacers (http://www.ebay.com/itm/4-Toyota-4R...es&vxp=mtr&hash=item414da2475f#ht_1587wt_1139) and your truck will look clean and aggressive.

Yeah, my tires are brand new! And booooo i'd have to remove my running boards?!?! haha
 
The guy I talked to yesterday that gave me the quote said the front would be the Bilstein adjustable coilovers and the rear would be daystar something! I had also gotten a quote for the revtek and toytec kit, and the bilstein was right in the middle and he said that it would be the best in ride quality.
your sig says you have a highlander but your pic is a 4runner! how much lift is on that? and i like those tires too.

yeah save your self teh $500 install fee and get one of us to come out, it's a fairly easy job that you guys can do in an afternoon, just buy them some pizza and beer.

i suggest whatever you do get the toytech adjustable shocks for the front, this will allow you to keep your current ride height or add a bit until it's time to get an little more aggressive tire and get the money out of the set you already have on there.

with the adjustable you can raise it and lower it until your happy with the look and will look good with some 31's to some 33's on there ,so a wider range of tires size with out being too stuffed or too much space....

i have the ome 882's with comfort shocks and i don't know if i have other issues going on or what but i'm just not happy with the ride,i've "almost" replaced every single piece in the whole suspension trying to chase the issue down, i'm switching to toytech/bilsteins asap, but that's me....

as with anything check the lift faq here to get a better idea of how people feel about their lifts, as with any opinions they can vary greatly.


also look around for a better install price, just don't go into a shop and say i want a 3 inch lift, they will over charge you and stick you with some generic skyjacker lift kit, you're better off ordering from one of the 3rd gen specific vendors and then finding a 3rd party installer.

i got quoted for $130 to have shocks installed all the way around by a local hot rod shop here i wouldn't think they would charge me more then $50 to chuck the rear coils in there on top of that, so if you look you can most likely get it installed at a shop for $250-300 after all it's all labour and at $60 shop rate it shouldn't be more then a 4 hour job tops.....
i think 1500 otd is pretty high.....
 
you dont want a revtec or daystar anything, its just a spacer/puck that will make your ride horrible. and will promote spring sag(already a bad enough problem for the rear with out spacers). you dont have to remove the running boards, some of us do just to make it look more aggressive and taller, if your not gonna wheel it much, then leave them on, they arent gonna hurt anything.

highlander is a trim level that was offered on the 4runner before it became it's own series of vehicles..............

daystars are spacers as far as i know and not an actual coil, no way in hell would i pay 1.5k for a front susp lift and a spacer lift in the rear ...
again really really do yourself a favour and read the lift faq
there's also othe rthing you should consider as well, diff drop and adjustable pan hard bar, if they are doing right by you the 1.5k should include all of this and a proper coil in the rear end .....

does that sound right to you.....1.5k for half a lift kit and some spacers? the more i look at this the more i think the op might be getting fleeced....
 
wouldnt it just be easier to buy the kit and everything i would need is in it instead of buying it all seperate?! ha ha
(sorry im oblivious to this stuff!)
i start to "lose track" on which to get or not to get :)

yeah, its cause shes a chic, and the "shop" thinks they can pull a fast on over on her.

to the OP; i can go by a full spacer lift for under $200 right now, with out having to shop around for it. they are cheap and worthless imo, you WILL be unhappy with the ride quality. for $1500 you should be able to go to toytec and buy a full lift with everything you need to install it and buy the pizza and beer for the guy who come over to install if for you(dont give them the beer till they are done, or they will **** it up lol)

haha, no , and sorry for fubar'ing the gender thing,

yeah the links to "reputable" lift kit providers i listed sell everything as a kit or as pieces depending on what you need and what you want todo, both companies have put in the time and research to figure out what really works with out trucks........

the faq is there to provide you with everything you ever need to know, so just take what their saying and what sounds good to you and find a kit that has those pieces in it, i know the faq seems a bit confusing but it's laid out like that so you can fully customize your lift if you wish , when in reality a majority of people like you aren't massive 4runner nerds and just want a lift that rides good and gets the job done, the faq is a bit more in depth for the nerds around here, me being one of them.

to make things simpler on yourself i would really only consider the toytech and the SS lift kits and give them both a call and talk with them, see what you think, read some reviews on the forum and go with what sounds good to you and what you can afford, from the last few posts i just don't see you rummaging through scrap yards and the like trying to piece together a budget lift or messing around with a series of shocks and coils until you find one you really like, not because your a girl but because you really seem to just want something that looks good and rides good and don't seem to care about the details, really though with either the SS kit or toytech you will be happy enough.......and no worries on the faq thing, just whatever you do don't go back to that shop....any chance it happens to be a 4wd brand store ?
 
Welcome! I'd add my two cents, but these guys already covered anything I'd say. Listen to them. Good peoples who know their stuff.
 
1500 for a 3inch lift with spacers on the rear???? What the F.. Whatever you do, don't go there again.. Where in Va are you? There's got to be a few guys on here that are close enough to come help you out with the install.
Also check some of the other forums for springs- yotatech, ttora etc- read through the lift sticky there's a lot of different combos you could go with, and most aren't that expensive.

but i didnt know anyone to help me with this or install it....thats why i got here :)

i had already read the faq before i even registered on here. but w/ me not knowing sh*t about this stuff and not really knowing what any of that means....its confusing and nerve wracking haha so yep thats why im like 'ok i want this this and this....whats the best thing to get?!'

that shop is the "known" place to go...mostly big a$$ fords and chevys ;-p

It seems to be the place to go if you want to bro out your truck. I wouldn't go there. One, they obviously don't specialize too much in import 4wd's as they're all on one page. And two, the only two 3rd gens they have as examples of their work are done with spacer lifts.

Stick around here. We'll figure out exactly what you are looking for so you can order it yourself and then like others have said, I'm sure there are some local cats out there who'll help you install it for some food and beers. Good to put a hand in yourself because you're gonna learn that much more about your ride if you do.

lol yeah definitely not trying to bro it out!!! (oh and my yota is a 2wd...if that matters) i dont mind getting greasy and turning a wrench to help out. i would actually enjoy watching it. i use to be into racing cars YEARS ago and i would change my own oil and stuff...so i definitely dont mind putting a hand in!
