Newly Installed Brakes Issue

Hey guys,

I just recently installed new Toyota pads and rotors on the front of my 2010 Limited. Install was relatively pain free with a breaker bar, but something doesn't sound quite right.

I'm getting a constant scraping sound from the front left when the brakes are not applied. The sound is very similar to a brake pad wear indicator. I'm not hearing anything from the front right. I pulled everything back off once, and everything looked normal, but there is a scraping sound when turning the hub/rotor by hand when the pads are in. The caliper pistons compressed quite easily when removing the old pads, so I don't think they're stuck/seizing. I checked the dust/heat shield on the back of the rotor and it's not rubbing.

Does anyone know what it might be? I installed new shims that came with the new pads, and they were slightly different than the old ones. I plan on tearing it apart again and can post pictures if anyone thinks it will help.

I had this issue however it was the stick tape weights rubbing on caliper ! Sure you put pads in right side in ?

LOL, yes. Friction surface is against the rotor.

Did you install new rotors? or had them machine down? they could warp but the old pads had already settled themselves with the same deformation.

Never mind I re-read and saw you put in new rotors :roadkill:

Did you go through the bedding cycles to sit the pads properly?

Yup, new rotors.:thumb:

So, I may have resolved the issue. Apparently there is an inside pad and outside pad for each corner. I don't know what the difference is, except for one has a wear indicator and the other does not. Turns out I had two inside pads (no wear indicator) installed on the front left and two outside pads (w/ wear indicator) installed on the front right. I don't know why this caused scraping/dragging issues, but it did.


In this picture, the top pad (w/o wear indicator) is the inside pad and the bottom pad (w/ wear indicator) is the outside pad.

I have not done any bedding process yet as I'm waiting for new rear rotors that'll be in on Monday. The rear brakes (old) are also grinding pretty good, and may have contributed to some of what I was hearing before. As far as I can tell, the noises from up front are gone.
