Any thoughts on when we may see the first significant changes to the 5th gen? Since they ended the 4th gen with automatic climate control any chance we may see that level of change for the 2012 model year? Does Toyota make changes that significant 3 years into the model year?

Doesn't the Limited have automatic climate control? If I could have afforded it, I would have purchased a Limited.
Yes I bet there will be. Well there has to be. I'm sure there will be HID's, auto climate control, built in antenna in the window, etc
The new 4runner is sweet but some things they went backwards on. But of course Toyota will improve and update the model as years go by.
The 6th gen will be a repeat and will start out with halogens, mast antenna, and end will all the goodies toward the end of the model year run.

My money is on 2013...
Seems like they waited 3 yrs last time around (2006 update to 2003 4th gens).
They'll probably change the shape of the headlights and tweak the grill a bit like last gen's refresh just to try and make ours look older. That's when I'll go ahead and do the Satoshi grill mod with the "Toyota" lettered emblem.

Six-speed automatic trans for 2013, also LED tails, xenon headlamps (option on SR5, std on Limited) better sweep to rear window, towing package, increase in power to 303 hp, 300 lb-ft torque, more sound deadening, front grille change, standard running boards and flaps on all models.

Ability to buy certain LTD goodies in the SR5, such as heated seats, NAV
Xenon HIDs
Slight styling changes
Auto-down-assist rear gate door
Improved NAV and BT capability
Offer TE moldings on SR5 and LTD????!!!!
Leather option in the TE
Blizzard Pearl exterior option on the TE!

Am I the only one who prefers a manual climate system (and manual headlights for that matter)? I came from 2 Infinitis and a LR3 and never once used auto climate. I prefer to set the fan and temp myself, every time. Letalone that on the 4Runner I find the 5 round knobs much better looking than the 4 with all the buttons.

1) You CAN get heated leather seats in the SR5, from the factory, same as the LE. The option for Nav would be nice though, I agree. Then again if you do that there becomes less and less reasons to jump from an SR5 to a LE.
2) So we buy a extremely capable off-road SUV, modify them a lot, but we are afraid to break a fingernail closing out rear gate door? Seriously, I just don't get peoples desire for that feature. In a minivan or crossover, sure, my wife complains about breaking her nails all the time in the winter on her Escape, but not an issue for me

No, I absolutely HATED the one in my old Audi because it didn't have knobs. The one in the LE is pretty nice because it is somewhat manual with the big easy dials. It feels more like my older cars with two knobs.

Oops my bad on that one. Thought I remembered some folks complaining about not being able to get heated seats in the SR5. Regarding the rear gate door, I have ZERO desire for that function...just another thing to break after 100k miles or wear out, and, I like the manual closing of all my doors so that I KNOW that they are closed for sure!
I was just speculating about what they might change mid-cycle to try to help the OP get a better idea. Just cause I put those things in there does NOT mean I want them!

Exactly! Sometimes more mechanical and electrical systems are not always the best! Just like the retractable running boards you see, I have 3 friends who have them on their SUV's from the factory, every one of them has had problems.

I have a 2010 SR5 with factory leather heated seats. Of course it was part of a package and not a stock option.

A hybrid version will be pretty neat or even a EV version since Toyota is working with Tesla on a RAV4 EV; But I think neither of these two will happen since Toyota is basing the 4Runner as a body on frame off-road adventure type vehicle.
My guess includes:
- LED Tails
- New headlight housing & Projectors
- Maybe Auto-close/open rear hatch
- Heated steering wheel (Limited?)
- Facia Lift
- In-glass antenna

For a vehicle that size, that is fantastic fuel economy. The previous HyHi was on a really old engine, so that hurt efficiency. Now that it has the GR 3.5L, things are much better versus the old MZ 3.3L. And 28/28 w/ AWD is impressive no matter how you look at it. There was an article recently about Toyota putting hybrid drivetrains in their Hino heavy duty vehicles. That tech should be able to be downsized for the T4R.
I think an EV wouldn't make much sense because you'd need a TON of batteries for it to have any range. Toyota has claimed they would offer a hybrid of every vehicle they make by 2020. If they make it for the Tacoma (which they'd be insane not to.. they'd own the market for people that want a truck but want decent fuel economy), it should fit right into the T4R. I mean, I'm happy with 22mpg in my T4R right now, but when gas is $5/gallon, I'm not going to want to daily drive something that inefficient.

No offense, but please do research before you post false information. The 2010's offered factory heated leather seats, the same that are in the LE for 2010. I really hope you did not get duped by a salesman about this! There are a LOT of us on the board with 2010's and the heated factory leather seats, unless we all just happen to have really hot arses!
I will chime in on the changes I guess...
V8 at some point, there is a high demand for it, I could see it next year even. I have a feeling Toyota was 'testing' the V6 to see if they could drag the V8'ers to change, some have, others will not.
I could see them possibly making the SR5 version interior all one color, like the LE, but doubt we will see much advancements in features other features.
Based on the demand for running boards I could see them changing the exterior to incorporate more 'form fitted' running boards, much like the 3rd gen had.
