Yes the snow performance is that bad.
I'm on Cooper St Maxx's now and they are all around much better. I didn't realize how bad the RG were until I put on the Coopers in January. I was putting the rig in 4 Hi with even a bit of snow to keep traction in corners and from a stop. With the coopers I can get where I'm going without being in 4 Hi frequently. In deep snow and on ice the RG's are a joke.

There are some other AT's I hear are good too depending on your application. Check out the Cooper AT3 XLT or the Falken AT3W is 3 Peak rated

Agree with this wholeheartedly. Ridge Grapplers are absolutely terrible in snow. I've done trail runs where folks in full on MTs were easily getting up hills that I had to winch up. In other conditions I would say they are about average and definitely no better in mud than your average AT. The only stand out benefit these bring is how quiet they are on the highway.

Thanks for the input! So do you think you would have gone with P-rated if they had been in stock? I just called my local DT and they said they could have Cs tomorrow or Ps next week.

Haha, I'm undecided. My offroad driving course in June will help me make the final decision. Taking a 2-day basic offroad and then winching/recovery course. Should clear things up for what I need for my style. Would have gone P, but as of now, I don't regret getting the C load. Will let you know if I change my mind.

Now that I think about it, it would probably be a bad idea to get tires right now with memorial day around the corner. No way of knowing what sales will be like, but I can wait an extra week. Last year's was $75 rebate.

This weekend was the last straw with these tires. After dealing with average off-road traction, terrible snow traction, mud performance no better than any AT and durability issues I finally got rid of them. While traversing a rocky trail I put a severe sidewall gash in one and a minor slice in another.

Never had problems like this with other tires I’ve run in the past on these same trails. I know folks have had luck with these guys but I can’t recommend these tires for heavier off-road use.

After dealing with average off-road traction, terrible snow traction, mud performance no better than any AT and durability issues I finally got rid of them. While traversing a rocky trail I put a severe sidewall gash in one and a minor slice in another.

Never had problems like this with other tires I’ve run in the past on these same trails. I know folks have had luck with these guys but I can’t recommend these tires for heavier off-road use.

I think there’s a reason you see Ridge Grapplers on a lot of show trucks and rigs with Carolina Squat Again, great on the highway but not enough tire for real off-road use.

I went with a set of Cooper ST Maxx a little heavier but supposed to be tough as nails

That's what I went with too. Got about 7000 miles on them so far and about 800 dirt miles. I think you'll be happy with them

I am on RGs as well.
While I have been ok so far off road I think I am going to go Toyo RT next time around.

This all doesn't sound good, sorry for your misfortune. I will be hitting tougher trails in September as my June classes were postponed due to SIP. Will see if I will hold out. My instructor always goes with KO2s but I wanted to try the RGs to see how they go :shrug:.

I noticed you had the LT tire too, curious to ask for others as well as myself... were these C or E rated?

Lastly, after you get about 5K+ miles on them, would love to know how noisy are the Coopers compared to the RGs? I felt RGs were noisier than the old TGs I had from dealership. Only within the first 5K+ miles were the RGs quiet like the stock tires. Not the mud terrain droning noise but it was about a couple of bumps up from before.

I have about 7000 on my St Maxx (285/75 E) coming from Ridge Grapplers (305/70 E and 285/75 C) and I don't find them to be much different as far as the volume goes than the Ridge Grapplers. Although the hum is slightly different pitched. Honestly, I think they were louder new than now. I just drove to SLC from Denver and back last week and I was pleased with all aspects of their performance. We'll see how they continue to preform

These were E-rated tires and if there is one thing Ridge Grapplers do well its being a quiet AT tire. The Coopers sound like they may be slightly louder but I cant really tell. My truck is super noisy with wind so tire sound is the least of my worries

Ive been reading this thread and I'm on 35x12.5R17 LT E rated Ridge Grapplers... I went RG's because I read reviews on Coopers ST Maxx having issues with balancing and some people having wobbles. But this was maybe 2 years ago.

I've had gone to big bear with fresh powder and slushed road conditions and RG's were good ... Ive have duratracs make me spin, slide and drifted side ways on 2wd; on a slushed up road...

ps. I dont rock crawl or do crazy trails ... kinda hard with the family and baby in tow.

Here’s a shot of me literally inches away from rolling off a shelf road because my Ridge Grapplers had no lateral traction and I just slid to the edge of the trail. My buddy in the GMC Canyon waltzed through this section in Patagonia MTs with no issue. I was also constantly using my winch to pull myself through while he was just pushing forward. Never had issues like this with any of the off-road tires I’ve used over the years.

The reason I so quickly ditched my RGs is because they were simply the worst tire in the snow I’ve ever used. My truck has never been so unstable. This isn’t even subjective. I’ve been on many, many different types of popular tires and these RGs just don’t perform. Even my Falken MT 01s, a mud terrain, perform better in every way, especially the snow and slush.

Ok Im not arguing your experience... But I'm sharing mine... I've been in Big Bear here in SoCal and it was powder and even slushed roads... Looked like the same kind of roads your on and I had no issues. The only time I've ever experienced spinning or sliding side ways is or was on Duratracs and I was in 2wd ...

All good man I think we are just both trying to share our experiences. The picture above is an unplowed forest service road high in the Sierras (6000ish ft) with at least 8ft+ of snow underneath my tires. Snow on top of pavement is a little different, same with powder and slush conditions.

Did you have issues with balancing them ???
And how many miles have you run on them ???
What PSI are you running on your Coops on and off ???

No balancing issues and no vibrations at all on the STT Maxxs but I only have maybe 15 miles on them. Running about 38 psi currently.

I was looking for that but haven't felt any. However, I did not try braking hard at 65 mph. Im sure its there most likely from the aggressive tread pattern.
